Action first
The brigadier, driving from Petersburg to his home, drove with his wife and son to visit the councilor. The brigadier decided to marry Ivan’s son, who had recently visited Paris and therefore everywhere screwed up French words, to the daughter of counselor and stepdaughter of councilor Sophia. Husbands make compliments to the wives of their comrades. The brigadier and counselor advise Ivanushka to read military and civil documents, the brigadiers are expendable notebooks, and the counselor is romance novels. Ivan says that, apart from romance novels, he does not read anything.
The adviser argues that in military service the brigadier is the same as the adviser in the civil service, that his condition could be greater if the wife was not wasteful. Everyone speaks about what kind of conversations are interesting to him. The brigadier likes to talk about military affairs, the adviser – about the courts and decrees, the brigade leader – about
The brigadier and counselor are quietly admiring the wives of other people. Ivan comments on his father’s words in French. Father does not understand his son and asks to speak in Russian. The brigadier is proud that neither he, nor his son ever taught grammar, and it is not needed. The brigadier thinks that you do not need to spend money on a book, and the counselor tore up one grammar in her hair.
The servant reports the arrival of Dobrolyubov, in whom Sophia is in love. The councilor remains with Ivan, the Counselor goes with the brigade leader to walk around the garden.
The son and counselor scold their relatives. Ivan calls his parents fools, animals and considers himself unhappy, because he is 25 years old, and his parents are alive. The counselor claims that her husband is a freak. She says that the counselor left the service when a decree about larceny (bribery) was issued, and left for the village, which he managed to dishonestly acquire. He is stingy, pious, steals during the day, and he commits
Ivan asks the counselor what she does. The counselor dies with boredom, only three hours of the morning toilet, into which she changes the hats sent from Moscow, brighten up her existence.
Ivan is guessing at himself and it turns out that the king must get married, and his lady does not like. Ivan admits that he does not want to marry Sophia. The counselor and Ivan are explained in love to each other. The counselor says that Sophia is in love with Dobrolyubova. Sophia and Dobrolyubov come. Sophia calls the upcoming wedding her death, on which she pushes the father and mother. Ivan and the councilor leave. Dobrolyubov and Sophia realize that Ivan and the counselor are in love, and the counselor has a passion for the brigadier, who does not notice this. Dobrolyubov says that his love for Sophia is based on honest intent, but Sophia’s father refused him because of poverty. The love of others is ridiculous and disgraceful. Sophia does not fear Dobrolyubov’s small fortune, and he himself hopes that his prosperity will soon increase if his case is completed in court.
The second action
The counselor asks Sophia about the cause of her sadness. She replies that she does not agree with his will. Sophia does not want to marry Ivan, because he is a fool, stuffed with French nonsense, which has no respect for her. The adviser objects that Ivan has an important advantage – villages. He admires the virtues of the brigade leader, who surpasses his virtues by “every creature”. The adviser calls on Sofya to please her in every way. He asks Sophia to show respect to the brigadier and to mention that the father taught him so.
The adviser argues that he can not cope with his passion – his love for another’s wife. He even gives the daughter in marriage against her will, to see the brigadier more often.
The brigade leader comes in. The counselor repents of his sins, that he wants a brigade leader. She does not understand the church language, so she is not aware of his hints. Asked what he wants to ask her, the counselor is explained in love. This scene is watched by the son. The brigade leader still does not understand what the counselor wants to ask. Ivan tells her that the counselor is mating with her. The adviser, dumbfounded, leaves.
The brigade leader is indignant. She wants to tell her husband right away. Ivan and a visiting counselor assure the brigade leader that Ivan joked and even swore for fun, because in France everyone does that.
The son and counselor remain alone. They agree that persistence and patience are now ridiculous, that they live by the same rules of life, that destiny has united them as people of one mind, one taste, one temper. But the misfortune is that the counselor is Russian. Ivan intends to take her with him to France. The councilor doubts that his father will let Ivan go, let alone go with him, but the son thinks that the brigadier in France, enlightened, will at least resemble a person a little.
The adviser notices that the brigadier is in love with her. The son wants to call his father to a duel, because they do so in France.
The brigadier comes to call everyone to the table. He asks Ivan not to bother the counselor, but the counselor objects that they had a fun time without a brigadier.
Ivan tells his father that he does not want to marry a Russian, because in spirit he belongs to the French crown. Father and son insult each other. The son wants to get rid of the power of his father. The brigadier promises to leave his son with sticks.
The adviser says that she is worried about the rudeness of the brigadier towards his son. She asks to talk about Paris, the foreman promises not to interrupt.
The son remembers that everyone in Paris was very happy about him. When Ivan came, everyone started laughing, only he or only talked about him. In his opinion, everyone who visited Paris is more French than Russian. Ivan leaves, because the brigadier interrupts him.
The adviser remains with the foreman. She asks him to stop being rude to his son. She likes Ivan’s stories about Paris. The brigadier considers this a joke. He wants to talk to the counselor, because Ivan hindered him before. The counselor does not understand or pretends that she does not understand. The explanation is interrupted by the incoming counselor and Dobrolyubov.
Dobrolyubov won the process, corrected his affairs, now he has two thousand souls. The adviser considers the only drawback of Dobrolyubov is that he was not in Paris, and the adviser is sure that two thousand souls cover all vices.
The adviser asks how Dobrolyubov achieved such an early decision, if everywhere there is a lot of bribe-takers. Dobrolyubov answers that he turned to higher justice. The counselor asks if Dobrolyubov wants to marry. Dobrolyubov said that he would not marry anyone if they did not give him Sophia.
Step Four
Sophia thinks that his father will still not give her for Dobrolubov, and Dobrolyubov hopes for the avarice of the adviser.
Comes a crying brigade leader. She complains that her husband called her a fool and a pig. Once as a joke, he pushed her so hard into her chest that she almost died.
A son and a counselor come, everyone plays cards, and the foreman and counselor play chess. During the game, the brigadier insults the brigadier, the adviser for her intervenes. Word for word is entered into the dispute by everyone, only the brigade leader wisely walks away.
The adviser reproaches the brigadier in the fact that he is acting badly with his wife. The brigadier blames the spouse for all sorts of sins and even for the fact that she has been healed in the world, and blames her son, who grew up unsuitable. Dobrolyubov notes that children make parents honor and dishonor, depending on education.
The adviser reproaches the brigadier for not appreciating the merits of his wife: humble, hardworking, beautiful, true. The brigadier claims that the spouse is loyal to him, because he is worthy of loyalty.
The adviser asks the brigadier not to attack too much his wife, and the brigadier believes that the counselor should not intercede for someone else’s child. The brigadier and counselor admire each other’s wives and come to the conclusion that they can not change their wives, because the wife of a good husband can not love another.
Step Five
The brigadier persuades Ivan to marry. It’s not his business to choose a bride. She herself first spoke with her husband 2 weeks after the wedding. Ivan answers in French. The brigadier asked him to speak Russian or to teach her in French.
The councilor asks Ivan to hide his feelings more carefully, because his father suspects something. Ivan praises the counselor for knowing French words and admits that the French coach taught him French. When Ivan and the counselor are explained in love, the brigadier and counselor are included.
The relationship between Ivan and the counselor opens. The adviser considers himself dishonored and asks him to pay. The brigadier promises to leave his son with a stick. Sophia says that now Ivan will not come out, and the adviser agrees. Ivan tells how the adviser stood on his knees in front of the brigadier. The brigadier promises to mutilate the adviser. The adviser reminds the brigadier how he explained to her in love. The counselor requires the foreman to get out of his house. Ivan and the counselor rush to say goodbye, they are taken away.
Dobrolyubov again asks Sophia’s hands to her parents. The adviser does not object and believes that she is condemned to suffer to death. The adviser agrees and says that he is punished for his sins, and without conscience live on everything in the world worse.
