A good person is not easy to find
The story takes place in the south of the USA in the state of Georgia. The head of the family, Bailey wants to take her children, the eight-year-old son John, the daughter of June, the wife with the baby and her mother to Florida. But Bailey’s mother, the grandmother of the children, is trying to dissuade the family from going there. First, they were already there last summer, and secondly, and most importantly, the newspapers write that a criminal from the federal prison escaped by the name of Izgoi, who is going to Florida. All the exhortations of the grandmother are useless, the whole family sits down in the car and leaves Atlanta, the day is beautiful, the grandmother talks about her youth, shows the landmarks of the region, and all the high spirits of travelers who started the long-awaited trip. On the way, they stop to have a bite at a roadside cafe. The mood gets even better when, throwing a coin in a jukebox,
After visiting the cafe, the Bailey family continues on its way. Grandmother is sleeping sweetly in the back seat, but when they pass through Tumsborough, she wakes up and suddenly remembers that somewhere in the neighborhood there is an old plantation, a beautiful house, an oak alley with gazebos. Although she was there for a long time, even in her younger years, the grandmother asserts that she remembers the road well and insists that one must visit this local attraction without fail. The son and daughter-in-law do not want to turn aside to avoid wasting time on the way, but grandmother manages to interest children, and they get their father’s consent to turn back and drive to the plantation along the country road. Bailey grumbles, because the road is very dusty and uneven, it can be seen that for a long time no one has ridden it. Suddenly, grandmother realizes that she was wrong: the plantation is not located in Georgia, but in Tennessee. Suddenly the machine turns over and falls under a slope. No one died, but Bailey’s wife broke her shoulder and hurt her face. Bailey looks at her mother silently and fiercely. Nearby there is no one, cars on this road, most likely, do not go. But then, in the distance, near the forest, a car appears on the hill. Grandma waving her hands and calling for help. In the car, approaching to the victims, three men are sitting. The face of one of them seems grandmother familiar. Getting better, she realizes that this is the same Outcast she had read about in the newspaper. Seeing the gun from one of the men, the grandmother begs Izgoy not to do them any harm. She says that in the shower he is probably a good person. The outcast man orders a man with a revolver to take Bailey and John to the forest. They are going away. Grandmother, very alarmed, assures Izgoy that he can still become an honest man, can settle down, if only he will pray to God. Two shots, heard in the forest, further aggravate the situation. The outcast begins to tell his grandmother about his unhappy life. Meanwhile, the companions of Outcast, Bobby Lee and Hyrum, come out of the woods with Bailey’s shirt in their hands. The outcast asks Bailey’s wife and children to join hands and follow the returned men back to the forest, where they can see their relatives leaving there. Left alone, the grandmother tries again to persuade the Outcast to pray to God. When a desperate cry is heard from the forest, followed by shots, the grandmother, distraught, asks Izgoy not to kill her. She again appeals to Jesus Christ, which further infuriates the bandit. The grandmother touches her hand to the Outcast, saying: “You are my son, you are one of my children.” The outcast bounces off like a snake stung, and shoots the old woman three times in the chest.
