HISTORY OF CREATION

The idea of the opera “Daisy” (“Twilight”) was prompted by Paliashvili by the famous Georgian playwright and actor V. Gunia (1862-1938). He also owns a story and a libretto, in which verses of outstanding Georgian poets – Sh. Rustaveli, N.

Baratashvili, A. Tsereteli and Vazha Pshavela are widely used. Paliashvili began working on the opera in 1921. The premiere took place on December 19, 1923 in Tbilisi; her success was greatly facilitated by the appearance in the title role of the famous Georgian singer Vano Saradzhashvili. Despite this, the author subjected his opera to some processing, adding a number of issues (Malkhaz’s aria in the first act, dances and dance songs in the second). Beginning with the first performance to this day, “Daishi” enjoys wide popularity and does not leave the stage of the Tbilisi Opera House.

PLOT

Twilight shrouded Georgian village. In the distance you can see the church. Soon rural youth will converge there, to celebrate the traditional temple festival “hatoob” with merry songs and dances. On this festive evening, Maro is especially sad. Her beloved Malkhaz went to distant countries, and the girl was forcibly betrothed to the commander of Chiazo. Now Malkhaz is back, but the joy of meeting lovers is overshadowed: after all, Maro is the bride of Kiazo. Sounds of singing are heard –

then the pilgrims march on the feast. They are joined by peasants. Games, dances are started. The playful argument between the young peasant Tito and the elderly piper Tsangalo grows into a quarrel. Tsangala can not forgive Tito for the fact that he won the competition in comic songs. Young people, including Malkhaz, amuse themselves over the old man, and he, holding his resentment, decides to take revenge. All go to the temple. Malkhaz asks Maro to stay, but, fearing to raise suspicions of Kiazo, she leaves. Malkhaz gives himself an oath to return the beloved.

Night. The moon illuminates the square in front of the church, filled with peasants. The holiday is in full swing. In the meantime, Tsangala had already told Kiazo about the meetings of his bride with Malkhaz. Kiazo is amazed. The anger, the bitterness of disappointment, torment his heart. No, he will not give Malkhaz his bride! Maro is haunted by a premonition of trouble. Malkhaz tells her about love in vain, the girl does not see anything joyful in front of her. Suddenly, the terrible news comes: the enemy came down from the mountains and thrashed Georgian villages. Kiazo is hurrying to the square. He calls on the people to rise up to fight and defend their freedom. “Better death than the disgrace of slavery!” – he proclaims, and all in a single impulse pick up his words. On the square armed soldiers converge. A prayer sounds, the people ask God to send a victory over the enemy.

It’s brightening. On the deserted area – Kiazo and Maro. Kiazo blames the bride for violating the vow. Maro appeals to his chivalrous nobility: in fact Kiazo knew that her heart was given to Malkhaz. The girl returns the wedding ring. Anger is boiling in Kiazo’s soul: now he is forever disgraced. Appeared Malkhaz says that he does not want to become his enemy, but his lover will not give in to him. Rivals take on sabers: only weapons can now solve their dispute. A duel begins, but Maro throws his scarf between the fighting: according to the custom, the duel must stop. The girl tries to persuade Kiazo to refuse revenge, but he is adamant. In the battle, he mortally wounded Malkhaz. The people run to the cries of Maro. Everyone is ashamed of Kiazo, who left the battlefield for a personal revenge in a terrible hour. Dying Malkhas comforts Maro: he defended their love!
