“Two captains” of Kaverin in brief
Once in the city of Ensk, on the bank of the river, a dead mailman and a bag with letters were found. Aunt Dasha read each day aloud to her neighbors one letter each. Sanya Grigoryev especially remembered the line about long-range polar expeditions…
Sanya lives in Ensk with Sasha’s parents and sister. By absurd accident Sania’s father is accused of murder and arrested. Only the little Sanya knows about the real killer, but because of the dumbness, from which only his wonderful doctor, Ivan Ivanovich, will later save him, he can do nothing. The father dies in prison, after a while the mother marries. The stepfather turns out to be a cruel and mean-spirited person who torments both children and his wife.
After the death of his mother, Aunt Dasha and neighbor Skovorodnikov decide to send Sanya and his sister to the orphanage. Then Sanya and his friend Peter Skovorodnikov flee to Moscow, and from there – to Turkestan. “Fight and seek, find and
Sanya likes school: he reads and sculpts from clay, he has new friends – Valka Zhukov and Romashka. One day, Sanya helps bring a bag to an unfamiliar old woman who lives in the apartment of the school’s head Nikolai Antonovich Tatarinov. Here Sanya meets Katya, pretty, but somewhat inclined to “ask” the girl with pigtails and dark live eyes. After a while, Sanya is again in the familiar house of the Tatarinovs: he sends them there for a lactometer, a device for checking the composition of milk, Nikolai Antonovich. But the lactometer explodes. Katya is going to take the blame on herself, but the proud Sanya does not allow her to do it.
Tatarinov’s apartment becomes for Sanya “something like Ali-Baba’s
Four years passed – Sanya is seventeen years old. At school there is a performance of a staged “trial of Yevgeny Onegin”, it is here that Sanya again meets Katya and reveals her secret to him: he has long been preparing to become a pilot. Sanya finally learns from Katya the story of Captain Tatarinov. In June of the twelfth year, having come to Ensk to say goodbye to his family, he went on a schooner “St. Mary” from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok. The expedition did not return. Maria Vasilevna sent ineffectually the request for help to the tsar: it was believed that if Tatarinov died, then through his own fault: he “casually handled state property.” The family of the captain has moved to Nikolay Antonovich. Sanya often meets with Katya: they go together to the skating rink, to the zoo, where Sanya suddenly encounters her stepfather. At the school ball, Sanya and Katya are left alone, but their conversation is hindered by Camomile, who then reports everything to Nikolai Antonovich. Sanya is no longer taken from the Tatarinovs, and Katya is sent to her aunt to the Ensk. Sanya beats Camarot, it turns out, and in the story with Korablev it was he who played a fatal role. And yet Sanya repents of his actions – with a heavy feeling he goes to the Ensk.
In his hometown, Sanya finds both Aunt Dasha, and old Skovorodnikov, and Sasha’s sister, he learns that Petya also lives in Moscow and is going to become an artist. Once again Sanya re-read the old letters – and suddenly realizes that they are directly related to the expedition of Captain Tatarinov! With excitement, Sanya finds out that none other than Ivan Lvovich Tatarinov, opened the Northern Land and named it in honor of his wife Marya Vasilyevna, that it was through the fault of Nikolai Antonovich, this “terrible man,” that most of the equipment turned out to be unfit. The lines, in which the name of Nikolai is directly named, are blurred with water and preserved only in Sani’s memory, but Katya believes him.
Sanya firmly and resolutely denounces Nikolai Antonovich before Marya Vasilyevna and even demands that she “bring charges”. Only then Sanya realizes that this conversation finally struck Marya Vasilyevna, convinced her of the decision to commit suicide, because Nikolai Antonovich was already her husband by that time… Doctors can not save Marya Vasilyevna: she is dying. At the funeral, Sanya comes to Katya, but she turns away from him. Nikolai Antonovich managed to convince everyone that the speech in the letter was not about him at all, but about some “von Vyshimirsky” and that Sanya was guilty of Marya Vasilyevna’s death. Sanya only needs to prepare intensively for admission to the flight school, so that someday one can find the expedition of Captain Tatarinov and prove his rightness. The last time he saw Katya, he left to study in Leningrad. He works in a flight school and at the same time works in a factory in Leningrad; in the Academy of Arts are studying and Sasha’s sister, and her husband Petya Skovorodnikov. Finally, Sanya seeks destination in the North. In the city of the Arctic he meets with Dr. Ivan Ivanovich, who shows him the diaries of the navigator of the “St. Mary” Ivan Klimov, who died in 1914 in Arkhangelsk. Patiently deciphering records, Sanya learns that Captain Tatarinov, having sent people to search for land, himself remained on the ship. The navigator describes the hardships of the expedition, with admiration and respect, speaks about his captain. Sanya understands that the traces of the expedition should be sought precisely on the Earth of Mary. From Vali Zhukov Sanya learns about some Moscow news: Chamomile has become “the closest person” in the house of the Tatarinovs and seems to be “going to marry Katya”. Sanya constantly thinks about Katya – he decides to go to Moscow. In the meantime, they and the doctor are instructed to fly to the remote village of Vanokan, but fall into a snowstorm. Due to forced landing, Sanya finds a hog from the schooner “St. Mary”. Gradually, from the “splinters” of the captain’s history a harmonious picture is drawn up.
In Moscow, Sanya plans to make a report on the expedition. But first it turns out that Nikolai Antonovich already partly outstripped him, having published an article about the discovery of Captain Tatarinov, and then the same Nikolai Antonovich and his assistant Romashka publish slander against Sanya in Pravda and thereby seek the cancellation of the report. Ivan Pavlovich Korablev in many ways helps Sanya and Katya. With his assistance in relations between young people, distrust disappears: Sanya realizes that Katya is trying to impose a marriage with Chamomile. Katya leaves the Tatarinovs’ house. Now she is a geologist, head of the expedition.
An insignificant, but now somewhat “settled” Romashka leads a double game: he offers Sanya proof of the guilt of Nikolai Antonovich, if he refuses Katya. Sanya makes this known to Nikolai Antonovich, but he is no longer able to resist the deft “assistant.” With the help of the Hero of the Soviet Union, the pilot, Sanya, still receives permission for the expedition, Pravda prints his article with excerpts from the navigator’s diary. In the meantime, he returns to the North.
The expedition is again trying to cancel, but Katya shows determination – and in the spring they must meet with Sanya in Leningrad in order to prepare for the search. Lovers are happy – on white nights they walk around the city, they are always preparing for the expedition. Sasha, Sanina’s sister, gave birth to a son, but suddenly her condition deteriorates sharply – and she dies. The expedition is canceled for no apparent reason – Sanya is given a completely different purpose.
It takes five years. Sanya and Katya, now Tatarinov-Grigorieva, live in the Far East, then in the Crimea, then in Moscow. In the end, they settle in Leningrad, along with Petya, his son and Katya’s grandmother. Sanya participates in the war in Spain, and then leaves for the front. Once Katya again meets Chamomile, and he tells her how he, trying to save the wounded Sanya, tried to get out of the encirclement of the Germans and how Sanya disappeared. Katya does not want to believe Romashka, at this difficult time she does not lose hope. And really Romashka is lying: in fact, he did not save, but threw the seriously injured Sanya, taking away his weapons and documents. Sanya manages to get out: he is treated in a hospital, and from there he goes to Leningrad in search of Katya.
There is no Katya in Leningrad, but Sanya is invited to fly to the North, where there are already battles. Sanya, and not finding Katya in Moscow, where he just missed her, not in Yaroslavl, thinks she is in Novosibirsk. During the successful execution of one of the combat missions, Grigoriev’s crew makes an emergency landing near the place where, according to Sani, it is necessary to search for traces of the expedition of Captain Tatarinov. Sanya finds the captain’s body, as well as his farewell letters and reports. And after returning to Polyarnyy, at the doctor Pavlov Sanya finds and Katya.
In the summer of 1944, Sanya and Katya spend their holidays in Moscow, where they see all their friends. Sanya needs to do two things: he gives testimony on the case of the convicted Romashov, and in the Geographical Society he passes his report on the expedition, about the discoveries of Captain Tatarinov with great success, about who this expedition died. Nikolai Antonovich is expelled from the audience with shame. In Ensk, the family gathers at the table again. The old man Skovorodnikov in his speech unites Tatarinov and Sanya: “such captains move humanity and science forward.”
