“The Dowry” Ostrovsky in brief

The action takes place in a large fictional city on the Volga – Bryakhimov. An open area near the coffee shop on the Volga boulevard. Knurov and Vozhevatov, having ordered champagne in a tea appliance, begin to discuss the news: a well-known beauty in a society, Larissa Ogudalova, a well-known beauty, marries a poor official Karandyshev. Vozhevatov explains the modest marriage desire Larisa, survived the strongest passion “brilliant master” Paratov, who turned her head, beat all the suitors and suddenly left. After the scandal, when another bridegroom for embezzlement was arrested right in the house of the Ogudalovs, Larissa announced that she would marry the first one who would woo, and Karandyshev, a long-time and unsuccessful admirer, “and so on.” Vozhevatov said that he was waiting for Paratov, who sold him his steamer “Swallow” than causes a joyful revival of the owner of the coffee house. The best in the city quadrangle jumped to the pier

with the owner on the goats and gypsies dressed in parade.

Appear Ogudalov with Karandyshev. Ogudalov is treated to tea, Karandyshev is important and, as an equal, appeals to Knurov with an invitation to dinner. Ogudalova explains that the dinner is in honor of Larisa, and she joins the invitation. Karandyshev reprimands Larissa for his familiarity with Vozhevatov, several times he condemns the house of the Ogudalovs rather than offends Larissa. The conversation is about Paratov, to which Karandyshev relates with envious ill will, and Larissa – with ecstasy. She is outraged by the attempts of the groom to compare himself with Paratov, declares: “Sergey Sergeich is the ideal of a man”. During the conversation cannon shots are heard, Larissa is frightened, but Karandyshev explains: “Some merchant-tyrant is peeling off his barge,” meanwhile from the conversation Vozhevatov and Knurov know that the firing is in honor of the arrival of Paratov.

Paratov appears accompanied by a provincial actor Arkady Schastlivtsev, whom Paratov calls Robinson, since he removed it from an uninhabited

island, where Robinson was dropped off for a rowdy. When Knurov asked whether he wished to sell the Swallow, Paratov replied: “I do not know what is” a pity, “I will find this advantage, I will sell everything, anything,” and after that informs me that he marries the bride with gold mines, came to say goodbye to the bachelor’s will. Paratov invites to a men’s picnic for the Volga, makes a restaurateur a rich order and calls while to dine with himself. Knurov and Vozhevatov regretfully refuse, informing that they are dining with the groom Larisa.

The second action takes place in the house of the Ogudalovs, the main hallmark of the living room is a grand piano with a guitar on it. Knurov arrives and rebukes Ogudalov that she gives Larissa for the poor man, predicts that Larissa will not endure a pitiful half-petty-bourgeois life and, probably, will return to her mother. Then they need a solid and rich “friend” and offers himself to such “friends.” After that, he asks Ogudalov, without stinting, to order Larisa a dowry and a wedding toilet, and send invoices to him. And leaves. Larissa appears, tells her mother that she wants to leave as soon as possible to the village. Ogudalova draws a village life in gloomy colors. Larissa plays the guitar and sings a romance “Do not tempt me unnecessarily,” but the guitar is upset. I saw the gypsy choir Ilya in the window of the giver, she calls him to fix the guitar. Ilya says that the master is coming, which “waited all year”, and escapes to the call of other gypsies who reported the arrival of the long-awaited client. Ogudalova worries about whether they did not hurry with the wedding and whether they did not miss a more advantageous party? Karandyshev appears, whom Larissa asks as soon as possible to leave for the village. But he does not want to rush to “leap up” Larissa, to satisfy his ego, which for so long suffered from neglecting him, Karandyshev. Larissa reproaches him for this, not at all hiding that he does not love him, but only hopes to fall in love. Karandyshev scolds the city for attention to the depraved, spoiled kutila, whose arrival everyone has driven mad: restaurateurs and sex workers, cabmen, gypsies and townspeople in general, and to the question of who it is, angrily throws: “Your Sergey Sergeevich Paratov” and, looking in window, says that he came to Ogudalov.

Ogudalova affectionately and familiarly takes Paratov, asks why he suddenly disappeared from the city, learns that he went to save the remnants of the estate, and now he is forced to marry a bride with a half-million dowry. Ogudalova calls Larissa, between her and Paratovym there is an explanation in private. Paratov reproaches Larissa that she soon forgot him, Larissa admits that she continues to love him and marries to get rid of humiliation before the “impossible fiancées.” Parov’s pride is satisfied. Ogudalova introduces him to Karandyshev, between them there is a quarrel, as Paratov seeks to offend and humiliate the bridegroom Larissa. Ogudalova settles the scandal and forces Karandyshev to invite for dinner and Paratov. Appears Vozhevatov, accompanied by Robinson, given out as an Englishman, and introduces him to those present, including with Paratov, who himself recently lost to him Robinson. Vozhevatov and Paratov agree to have fun at a dinner at Karandyshev.

The third action is in the office of Karandyshev, cleaned poorly and tasteless, but with big claims. On stage, Karandyshev’s aunt, laughing funny at the loss of dinner. Larissa appears with her mother. They are discussing a terrible dinner, a humiliating misunderstanding of Karandyshev’s position. Ogudalova said that the guests deliberately solder Karandyshev and laugh at him. After the departure of the women Knurov, Paratov and Vozhevatov appear, complaining about a cheesy lunch and terrible wines and rejoicing that Robinson, capable of drinking anything, helped to root Karandyshev. Karandyshev appears, who echoes and boasts, not noticing that they are laughing at him. He is sent for cognac. At this time, the gypsy Ilya says that everything is ready for a trip to the Volga. Men say among themselves what it is good to take Larissa, Paratov tries to persuade her. Appeared Larissa asked to sing, but Karandyshev tries to ban her, then Larissa sings “Do not tempt.” Guests are delighted, Karandyshev, intending to say a long-prepared toast, goes for champagne, the others leave Paratov alone with Larissa. He circles her head, saying that a few more such moments, and he will give up everything to become her slave. Larissa agrees to go on a picnic in the hope of returning Paratov. Appeared Karandyshev utters a toast to Larissa, in which he is most dear to the fact that she “knows how to disassemble people” and therefore chose him. Karandyshev is sent for another wine. Returning, he learns about Larissa’s departure for a picnic, understands, at last, that they laughed at him, and threatens to take revenge. Grabbing the gun, he runs away. goes for champagne, the others leave Paratov alone with Larissa. The fourth action is again in the coffee. Robinson, not taken on a picnic, from a conversation with a servant finds out that they saw Karandyshev with a gun. He appears and interrogates Robinson, where his comrades. Robinson gets away from him, explaining that they were casual acquaintances. Karandyshev leaves. Appearing back from the picnic Knows and Vozhevatov, believing that “the drama begins.” Both understand that Paratov gave Larisa serious promises, which he does not intend to carry out, and therefore she is compromised and her position is hopeless. Now their dream can come true to go with Larissa to Paris to the exhibition. In order not to interfere with each other, they decide to throw a coin. The lot falls Knurov, and Vozhevatov gives the floor to withdraw.

Appears Larissa with Paratov. Paratov thanks Larisa for the pleasure, but she wants to hear that she has now become his wife. Paratov responds that he can not break with a rich bride because of his passionate Larisa, and instructs Robinson to take her home. Larissa refuses. Appear Vozhevatov and Knurov, Larissa rushes to Vozhevatov with a request for sympathy and advice, but he resolutely shuns, leaving her with Knurov, who offers Larissa a joint trip to Paris and maintenance for life. Larissa is silent, and Knurov leaves, asking her to think. In desperation, Larissa comes to the cliff, dreaming of dying, but does not dare to commit suicide and exclaims: “How would someone kill me now…” Karandyshev appears, Larissa tries to drive him away, speaks of her contempt. He reproaches her, says, that Knurov and Vozhevatov were playing it out in a toss, like a thing. Larissa is shocked and, picking up his words, says: “Oh, if you are a thing, so expensive, very expensive.” She asks to send Knurov to her. Karandyshev tries to stop her, shouts that she forgives her and takes her out of town, but Larissa rejects this proposal and wants to leave. He does not believe in his words of love for her. Enraged and humiliated Karandyshev shoots at her. Dying Larissa gratefully accepts this shot, puts the revolver around her and tells the runaway to the shot that no one is to blame: “It’s me myself.” Behind the scenes you can hear gypsy singing. Paratov shouted: “Silence!”, But Larissa does not want this and dies under the loud gypsy chorus with the words: “… you are all good people… I love you all… all.” picking up his words, says: “Oh, if you are a thing, so expensive, very expensive.” She asks to send Knurov to her.
