Summary “The Ugly Duckling” by Andersen

Ducks have hatched ducks. One of them was late, and outwardly failed. The old duck frightened her mother that it was a turkey, not otherwise, but he swam better than other ducklings. All the inhabitants of the poultry yard attacked the ugly duckling, even the poultryman pushed away from the stern. Mother first interceded, but then she also took up arms against the ugly son. Once the duckling could not stand it and ran away into the swamp, where wild geese lived, whose acquaintance ended sadly: although two young geese suggested that they be friends with a wonderful duckling, they were immediately killed by hunters (a hunting dog ran past the duckling – “apparently, I’m so nasty that even a dog disgusted to eat me! “). At night, he reached the hut, where the old woman, a cat and a chicken lived. The woman sheltered him, blindly taking for a fat duck, but the cat and the chicken, who considered themselves to be the best half of the world, persecuted a new roommate,

He could not bear eggs and purr. When the duckling was drawn to swim, the chicken declared that it was all from stupidity, and the freak went to live on the lake, where everyone still laughed at him. Once he saw swans and fell in love with them as he had never loved anyone.

In winter the duckling froze in the ice; The peasant brought home, warmed up, but frightened the chick hawked and fled. All winter he sat in the reeds. In the spring he took off and saw floating swans. The duckling decided to surrender to the will of beautiful birds – and saw his reflection: he too became a swan! And according to the children and the swans themselves – the most beautiful and young. He did not dream of this happiness when he was an ugly duckling.

Ducklings hatched at the house duck. But one was the latest, and therefore outwardly failed. The oldest duck terribly frightened the mother by the fact that the duckling is like a turkey. And the late duck floated better than other ducklings. All who are not lazy, attacked and tweaked the poor and ugly duckling. Even the poultryman pushed him away

from the stern. His mother first felt sorry for him and stood up for him, and then she herself began to hate her ugly son. The poor duckling, harboring resentment, fled into the swamp where wild geese lived. Two young geeshers, who took him to their company, were shot. Even the dog, sniffing the duckling, ran past.

At night, he reached the hut, in which he lived a cat, a hen and an old woman. The cat and chicken poisoned the new roommate for not being able to carry eggs and purr like a cat. The ugly duckling always wanted to swim, and the chicken declared that it was all from stupidity. Then he left them on a large lake, where he saw beautiful swans. In his life he had never seen such birds. They were dazzling white and proudly raised their long necks. The ugly duckling, watching from the bushes, admired them and loved them.

Cold winter has come. In winter, the duckling froze on the ice. One peasant brought a duckling and warmed it, but the duckling, frightened, ran away from him into the swamp, where he sat in the reeds.

Early in the spring, he again saw these beautiful birds floating along the river. Seeing his reflection in the water, he was glad that he was the same as they swam to them. He did not dream of such happiness.
