Summary of “Angelo”

In one of the cities of Italy ruled by the old peace-loving Dook, who is the patron of the sciences and arts. Dook is so kind that his people are not at all afraid, and therefore justice in the Italian city is dozing. Long Dook reflects on how to fix this problem, and, finally, decides to put in his place Angelo, a man of experience and harshness. Dook himself, with no one good-bye, goes wandering.

As soon as Angelo comes to power, the laws begin to work, and on Fridays there are executions. Between the forgotten laws there was one ancient death threatening the adulterer. Angelo restores it, and the people begin to murmur against the new ruler, and the youth chuckles at him.

The first violator of this law is Claudio – a young patrician who fell in love with Juliet and deceived her. Claudio was going to marry Juliet, but their relationship becomes known, and in court the young man receives a legal sentence.

On his way to prison, the unfortunate Claudio meets

Lucio – a rake and a carefree reveler, who is asked to go to the monastery to Isabel – Claudio’s sister – and tell him about the grief that happened to him. Claudio hopes that Isabella will soften Angelo’s heart with her entreaties, and thus help her brother out of trouble.

At this time, Isabela sits in a monastery. In a day she should take a veil and discuss it with a nun. At this moment, Lucio appears and reports the calamity that happened to Claudio. Isabella decides to pray Angelo for mercy for his brother.

After asking the nun, Isabella, along with Lucio, goes to the nobleman. Angela is asking for a long time, but he is adamant. Desperate, Isabela declares that Angelo could have committed such a sin. Angelo grimaces and answers: “Leave me, I beg.” However, Isabela continues to ask what Angelo says to her: Claudio will be executed tomorrow. Then Isabela, for the salvation of her brother, offers gifts-her prayers. Angelo is giving her a date the next day

Part two

Angelo realizes that he fell in love with Isabel, he thinks about her the rest of the

day. In the morning she comes to him, and between them there is a conversation. During this conversation, Angelo first hints, and then openly says that if Isabela surrenders to him, then he will release Claudio from the death sentence. Isabela accuses Angelo of lying and hypocrisy and withdraws.

She comes to the prison, where Claudio is imprisoned and tells him about what happened. First he tells Isabel that he should not sin, but then he begs his sister to forget about chastity and fulfill Angelo’s condition. From such a proposal, Isabel is furious and is about to leave, but Claudio asks for forgiveness and holds her back. Isabela forgives Claudio.

Part Three

Claudio and Isabel’s conversation was heard outside the door in the guise of a monk, who, as it turned out, did not travel, but to find out the state of affairs in the city, went in different guises, hiding in a crowd, imitating Garun al-Rashid.

When the conversation between brother and sister ends, Dook opens the door and quietly recalls Isabel. He calms her down and says that he has an idea how to expose Angelo: it is necessary that instead of Isabel with him spent the night Angelo Mariana’s wife. Angelo threw Mariana out of the fact that bad rumors about her were circulating among the people-these were ungrounded accusations, but Angelo, and that was enough: “There should be no suspicion of the wife of Caesar.”

Mariyana spends the night with Angelo, and he does not notice the substitution. However, he does not fulfill his promise and issues an order for the execution of Claudio, and he also orders that his head be shown in his wards. Then Dook introduces his ring and seal to the prison governor, and thereby stops the execution, and instead of the head Claudio sends the head of the sea robber who died the same night.

Meanwhile, there is a rumor in the people that Dook will soon return, Angelo is embarrassed. Kind Dook welcomes the people and Angelo with a smile, not giving the appearance that he knows everything. Suddenly a cry is heard, and Isabela falls to the ruler’s feet. Angelo is frightened and tries to make Isabel insane, then Dook and reports that he knows about the misdeeds of Angelo. Dook orders Isabel and Angelo to go with him to the palace.

In the palace of Mariyana (she still loves Angelo with all her heart) and Isabel pray Dooka that he pardons the criminal, and he, listening to their pleas, forgives Angelo.
