Then the writer goes into childhood memories. Everything seemed alive to him, everything told fairy tales! For his constant chatter called Shmelev in the first grade of the gymnasium “Roman speaker”, and this nickname held for a long time.
All this was a “pre-literary” period of the writer’s life, which soon came “written.”
In the third grade, fascinated by the novels of Jules Verne, the boy wrote his first “poem” about the journey of all his teachers to the moon in a balloon made of the vast pants of his Latinist Behemoth. “Poem” even had success, and then fell into the hands of the inspector. In the second year the boy got to another philologist, Fedor Vladimirovich Tsvetaev, who gave the boy the freedom to write as he wants. The title came to the author himself – “At the mill”.
The story was creepy and with everyday drama. Shmelev made himself a witness to the denouement so vividly that he believed his own invention. But then a problem arose: how to publish this story? And the writer remembered that he saw on Tverskaya a signboard “Russian Review”, a monthly magazine. But he did not know anything about this journal and at last went to Tverskaya to look for him.
Shmelev came there right after school, in a heavy cotton coat. The doorman said to him: “Please come in. They want to see yourselves.” The boy broke off the couch and entered the sanctuary. Everything in the office of the editor-in-chief seemed huge to the boy: walls, a closet, a desk, and a palm tree. The editor was privat-docent of Moscow University Anatoly Alexandrov. He told the boy to come back in two months.
Shmelev looked there in the midst of the exams, but it turned out that it was necessary to look “in two months.” But he did not look, he had already become a student, and it was quite different.
It’s amazing that after a while an envelope came from the publishing house, where the student Shmelev was asked to look in. He came, and the editor told him: “I congratulate you, I liked your story, you have a pretty good dialogue, a lively Russian speech.” You feel Russian nature. “Write to me.” These words did not make a special impression on Shmelev, a couple of days later he forgot about them and did not understand that he had become a writer.
After some time, the magazine “Russian Review” got into Shmelev’s hands, where he found his story, without a single pass or amendment. There was no limit to the joy, but only for a few days. Then the little writer forgot about it again.
Then a new editor’s invitation. He came, not knowing why. And the editor handed the boy a fee of eighty rubles, which became a real shock to the young writer. Then the editor began to ask questions about the magazine, but the boy was a little ashamed, because in addition to the number for July, he did not see anything else. The editor also recommended Shmelev Konstantin Leontiev as a writer.
Shmelev left the publishing house hopped with the feeling that behind all this chance something great and unusually important is worth. He was literally seized by a wave of new emotions: “I looked at my name under the story,” as if it were not mine!
