The play takes place on a secluded island, where all the fictional characters are transferred from different countries.
A ship in the sea. Storm. Thunder and lightning. The crew of the ship is trying to save him, but the notable passengers – Neapolitan King Alonzo, his brother Sebastian and son Ferdinand, Duke of Milan Antonio and the royal associates of the king distract the sailors from their work. The boatswain sends passengers to the cabins in the most unpleasant terms. When the old virtuous adviser of King Gonzalo tries to shout at him, the sailor replies: “These roaring shafts do not care about kings!” March on the cabins! ” However, the efforts of the team do not lead to anything – under the plaintive cries of some and the curses of others, the ship goes to the bottom. This spectacle tears the heart of the fifteen-year-old Miranda, the daughter of the mighty wizard Prospero. He and his father live on an island, on the shore of which an unhappy
ship is broken. Miranda is praying for his father to use his art and pacify the sea. Prospero calms her daughter down: “I by the power of my art / I arranged so that all remained alive”. The imaginary shipwreck is conjured by a magician to arrange the fate of a beloved daughter. For the first time he decides to tell Miranda the story of their appearance on the island. Twelve years ago, Prospero, at that time the Duke of Milan, was overthrown from the throne by his brother Antonio, with the support of the Neapolitan king Alonzo, to whom the usurper undertook to pay tribute. To kill Prospero at once villains, however, did not dare: the duke was loved by the people. He and his daughter were put on an unfit ship and thrown on the open sea. They were saved only thanks to Gonzalo – the compassionate nobleman supplied them with supplies, and most importantly, says the magician, “he allowed me / With him to seize those folios, / What I above the duchy appreciate.” These books are the source of the magical power of Prospero. was already inhabited: it was inhabited by the disgusting Caliban, the son of the wicked sorceress Sykoraxa, expelled for the numerous villainies of Algeria, and the spirit of Ariel air. At first the magician tried to “civilize” the ugly savage, taught him to speak, but he could not defeat his base nature. The father immerses Miranda in a magical dream. Appears Ariel. It was he who defeated the Neapolitan fleet returning from Tunisia, where the king celebrated the wedding of his daughter with the Tunisian king. It was he who drove the royal ship to the island and played the shipwreck, locked the crew in the hold and put it to sleep, and scattered the noble passengers along the shore. Prince Ferdinand was left alone in a deserted place. Prospero tells Ariel to turn into a naval nymph, visible only to the wizard himself, and sweet singing to lure Ferdinand to the cave in which the father and daughter live. Then Prospero calls Caliban. Kaliban, who believes that he “got this island rightfully / From his mother,” and the sorcerer robbed him, rude to his master, And in response he showered him with reproaches and terrible threats. The evil monster is forced to obey. Ariel appears invisible, he sings, spirits echo him. Attracted by magic music, Ariel is followed by Ferdinand. Miranda is ecstatic: “What is this? Spirit? Oh God, / How beautiful it is!” Ferdinand, in turn, seeing Miranda, takes her for a goddess, so beautiful and sweet is Prospero’s daughter. He declares that he is a Neapolitan king, since his father had just died in the waves, and he wants to make Miranda a queen of Naples. Prospero is pleased with the mutual inclination of young people. “They,” he says, “are fascinated by each other, but they must Create obstacles for their love, / so as not to impair its ease.” The old man assumes severity and accuses the prince of being impostors. Despite the touching pleading of her daughter, he defeats the resisting Ferdinand by means of witchcraft and turns into slavery. Ferdinand, however, is satisfied: “From my prison at least a glimpse / See this girl I can.” Miranda comforts him. The mage praises his assistant Ariel and promises him fast freedom, while giving new instructions.
On the other side of the island, Alonzo mourns for her son. Gonzalo awkwardly tries to comfort the king. Antonio and Sebastian make fun of an elderly courtier. They blame Alonzo for the misfortunes that have occurred. The invisible Ariel appears to the sound of the solemn music. He casts a magic dream upon the king and the nobles, but two villains – Sebastian and usurper Antonio – remain awake. Antonio picks Sebastian on fratricide, he promises him a reward for help. The swords are already naked, but interferes, as always with music, Ariel: he awakens Gonzalo, and he the others. Unscrupulous couple can somehow wriggle out.
Caliban meets in the woods the jester Trinkulo and the royal butler Stefano’s drunkard. The latter immediately treats the freak with wine from the saved bottle. Caliban is happy, he declares Stefano his god.
Ferdinand, turned Prospero into slavery, drags the logs. Miranda wants to help him. Between the young people there is a gentle explanation. Frustrated Prospero quietly watches them.
Caliban proposes Stefano to kill Prospero and take possession of the island. The whole company is poured. They are on a sober head, not so clever, and then Ariel decides to fool them and confuse them.
Before the king and his suite, under strange music, a table appears, but when they want to start eating, everything disappears, Ariel appears in the form of a harpy to the thunderous rumblings. He reproaches those present for the crime committed against Prospero, and, frightening him with terrible torments, calls for repentance. Alonzo, his brother and Antonio go crazy.
Prospero tells Ferdinand that all his torments are only a test of love, which he has honorably withstood. Prospero promises the daughter to marry the prince, but in order to distract young people from immodest thoughts, orders Ariel and other spirits to play before them an allegorical performance, of course, with singing and dancing. At the end of the ghostly performance, the named father-in-law tells the prince: “We are created from the same substance, / What our dreams are. And sleep is surrounded / All our little life.”
Led by Caliban, Stefano and Trinkulo enter. In vain, the savage urges them to take decisive action – greedy Europeans prefer to pull off bright ropes, hung from the rope specially for this case. There are spirits in the form of beagle dogs, the invisible Prospero and Ariel are naming them on unlucky thieves. They run away with screams.
Ariel tells Prospero about the agony of criminal madmen. He feels pity for them. Prospero is also not stranger to compassion – he only wanted to lead the villains to repentance: “Although I am cruelly offended by them, / But the noble mind extinguishes anger / And mercy is stronger than revenge.” He orders the king and his entourage to be brought to his home. Ariel disappears. Left alone, Prospero talks about his decision to leave magic, to break his wand and drown magic books. Alonzo and his retinue appear under the solemn music. Prospero makes his last magic – he removes the enchantment of insanity from his offenders and appears before them in all greatness and with ducal regalia. Alonzo asks him for forgiveness. Sebastian and Antonio Prospero promise to keep silent about their criminal intent against the king. They are frightened by the omniscience of the magician. Prospero hugs Gonzalo and praises him. Ariel is not without sadness let go and flies away with a cheerful song. Prospero comforts the king by showing him his son – he is alive and well, he and Miranda play in a cave in chess and gently talk. Miranda, seeing the newcomers, admires: “Oh miracle! / What a lot of beautiful faces! / How the human race is beautiful! And how good / That new world where there are such people!” The wedding is over. The profound Gonzalo proclaims: “Not for that was he banished from Milan / Milan duke, so that his descendants / In Naples reigned? Oh, exult!” Are sailors with the miracle of a rescued ship. He is ready to sail. Ariel leads the spoiled Caliban, Stefano and Trinkulo. Everyone is amused over them. Prospero forgives thieves on condition that they clean the cave.
