“Polinka Saks” Druzhinin in brief summary

When Konstantin Aleksandrovich Saks announced to his wife that he must go for three weeks to the province, Polinka burst into tears and began to ask her husband to refuse to travel. She is sad, she is tormented by bad forebodings.

But Sachs is not just an official at large, but a man of duty and honor. The case of the embezzler Pisarenko, he must bring to the end. It’s about a hundred thousand state money. The treasury is replenished from a peasant’s pocket. And he does not believe, thirty-two-year-old man, the premonitions of a nineteen-year-old wife, a recent boarder.

Childishness and naivety, of course, make up the charm of the beloved Polinka, but he still wants her to become more mature in her actions and thoughts.

While this conversation is going on, the servant reports that Prince Galitsky asks permission to see them both: he has letters for Konstantin Aleksandrovich and Polina Alexandrovna.

Saks is very unpleasant this visit, but the wife

has already ordered to ask the prince in the living room. But Galitsky, two years ago,

Polinke, however, in frivolity and arrogance, went abroad, on the water, without talking to either the girl’s parents or herself. There before him the news of the marriage of the subject of his passionate love came to him.

His feeling is strong, but selfish. The early success of women gave rise to apathy, which can only be overcome by an unusual, freakish passion. He fell in love not with a woman, but with a child. Like Sachs, he is fascinated by the childishness, naivety and immediacy of the elegant and miniature Polinka. But his appearance in their house is not accidental. The letters are only an excuse, invented by his sister Anet Krasinskaya, Polinkin’s friend on the boarding house. She also invited her neighbor Zaleshin to write to Saksu and, using an opportunity, to send with her brother, who would still take her letter to Polinka. She tells her friend about the despair of her brother, about his illness even after she married Saks. This old, clumsy official is not worth Polinka. He’s a terrible

man. After all, in the Caucasus he was after a duel, which ended in the death of the enemy.

Zaleshin is a friend of Saks’s, long since the days of the Caucasian service. And with his letter he warns that Prince Galitsky is dangerous for his family happiness. The success of the prince among women is well known, he is young, rich, lucky and handsome, knows how to put anyone to him.

Meanwhile, the danger is much more serious than Zaleshin writes. The prince had time to come to terms with Pisarenko, that he detained Sachs during the investigation until he wrote and sent him a note with only one word “pretty”.

It takes time to conquer Polinka. The prince well understands that her ability to love has not yet fully developed in her, is not realized by her, and his goal is to focus on herself this her need for love. He chose tactics of frank confessions, stormy outbursts of passion or despair.

VYA, after a while it brought success to him and the suffering of Polinka, tormented by the consciousness of her sinfulness and criminality. Learning about this, Sachs wanted to take revenge on both, but how to avenge the child, who does not understand that he has done it! Yes, it seems, young people fell in love, and there is no serious matter. No, Sachs will not add to the humiliation that has already taken place. He will act differently than all. Month he hides his wife in a secluded dacha, and then in the presence of both announces that he renounces his rights, hands the papers certifying it, but warns that, having married, Polinka and the prince must go abroad. However, he, who lost both his wife and daughter in Polinka at once, will watch closely that his child does not become unhappy. At her first tear – he is a man who died.

Young people are overwhelmed by the greatness of this extraordinary man’s deed and go to Italy. However, even there, Polinke often remembers the strange words of the first husband at the moment of farewell, and they constantly press her heart with some weight.

Meanwhile, the upheavals that had taken place gave rise to consumption. With the disease, with the threat of death comes the realization of one’s own soul. It becomes clear that Polinka loves and always loved Constantine Sachs, only she did not understand him, herself, or life. And my husband just was sorry. Finally Polinka understands all this, when Sachs appears in their house in the absence of the prince and asks her why she is all sick, is there any grief she has? “Forgive me…” whispered the poor woman. Sachs kisses her hand and moves away.

From this moment Polinka can no longer love the prince: he is not a man, he is a child, she is old for his love. This is Sachs man, man: his soul is great and calm. She loves him. She wrote him a letter, which, after her death, the maid should send in his name. It will reveal to him that she appreciated him and his greatest sacrifice and pays him unlimited love.

Saks, who had been following the prince and his wife for a whole year, after his visit to Polinka, he left for Russia and settled in the estate of Zaleshin, where on one of the quiet summer evenings he was handed a letter from Italy from Princess PA Galitsky.
