Chekhov’s “Chameleon” in brief
Through the market square there is police inspector Ochumelov. He sees a running dog that catches up and grabs a swearing man. A crowd is gathering. A man shows the crowd a bitten finger. Ochumelov is determined: “I’ll show you how to dismiss dogs!” Eldyrin, “he turns to the policeman,” find out whose dog it is, and draw up a protocol! And you must kill the dog. ” After Ochumelov learns that the possible owner of the dog – General Zhigalov, all his resolve disappears. He turns to the policeman: “Take off, Yeldyrin, my coat is getting hot,” and then he says to the injured Khryukin: “You must have picked your finger with a stud!” At this time, the policeman begins to doubt that it is the general’s dog: “he has more and more cops”. Ochumelov is changing before his eyes, and now he is again resolute: “I myself know that the general has dogs that are expensive and thoroughbred, and this one knows what!
On the square there is a general cook Prokhor. Asked if they are a dog, he replies: “There have never been such a kind of offspring!” Ochumelov says: “I told you, she’s a tramp! Destroy, that’s all.” And Prokhor continues: “This is the general’s brother.” Ochumelov’s face is flooded with a smile of emotion: “Did their brother come here, Vladimir Ivanych? Is that their dog? I’m very glad… The little dog’s nothing… Shustra’s so… That’s the finger of this!” Prokhor takes the dog. The crowd laughed at Khryukin, and Ochumelov threatened him: “I’ll still get to you!” – and continues his journey through the market square.
