A short story of the story “Poor Liza” by NM Karamzin
The tale begins with a description of the cemetery on which Lisa’s girlfriend is buried. Starting from this picture, the author tells the sad story of a young peasant woman, who paid for her love.
Once, selling lilies of the valley gathered in the forest, Lisa met a young nobleman, Erast. Her beauty, naturalness and simplicity subdued the aristocrat, devastated by secular life. Each new meeting strengthened the love of young people, it seemed that their feelings could overcome any obstacles, but… Everything changed after the meeting, during which they became lovers. Relations with Lisa lost the charm of innocence for Erast, he became less and less likely to visit her modest, cozy home, and eventually disappeared altogether.
Accidentally met the lover in the city, Lisa joyfully rushed to him, but Erast hastily announced to her about his engagement to another and gave a farewell hundred rubles. Shocked by the incident, Lisa committed suicide the same day, rushing into the pond. By bitter repentance, Erastus had to pay for his cruelty: his whole life was poisoned by the torments of conscience, and only death saved him from suffering.
