What does it mean to be a gentleman today?

Monday, they say, the day is heavy, but this day was memorable for us. Our class teacher Inna Yurievna announced Monday… the Day of the gentleman. She explained that the gentleman is a man brought up, with an emphasis on being polite, with good manners. These qualities must be educated in yourself daily. In the meantime, we must present ourselves as gentlemen for at least one day.

And we “began to enter into the image” of a gentleman… At the break, the boys tried to let the girls out on leaving the class, in the corridor they gave way to the elders. The lessons were unusually quiet; They did not whisper, did not prompt, did not pass notes, did not shout out – in a word, behaved perfectly. In all, they were pointedly polite. The news that in our class the Day of the gentleman, instantly flew around the school. At first, everyone was just surprised. We were a bit embarrassed, we felt unusually in the role of gentlemen. After all, you had to follow your

speech. It was necessary to look neat. In the dining room, we did not climb, as usual, without queue for a bun. Then they started teasing us: “It’s all right, gentlemen, tomorrow you will be what you were: you are a gentleman for one day!”

At the hour of education the teacher summed up the Day of the gentleman. She once again stressed that the gentleman does not become in one day and everything is in our hands: on how we cultivate these good qualities, the attitude towards us depends…

We went to the exit from the school with Valya Zhukov, discussed today. In the doorway they ran into an elderly woman. She stepped aside, letting us go. As if nothing had happened, we passed by talking about our own. And suddenly Valya stopped: “Indeed, we were gentlemen, not even for a day, but only for a few hours!”

We took the trolley. That’s where there are many opportunities to show off as gentlemen! To our regret, there were a lot of vacant places in the Trolleybus, therefore we could not show our gentlemanliness – to give way to the elders. We left the trolleybus. A woman laden with bags came down behind us. Without saying a word, we held out our hands to her. She smiled and said: “That’s worth the gentlemen!”
