Summary “The moment of truth in August of 1944”

Our troops liberated the whole of Byelorussia and most of Lithuania in the summer of 1944. In these territories, there are still separate groups of German soldiers, many enemy agents, underground groups and gangs. All these shadow groups acted unexpectedly and very cruelly: behind them there were many crimes and murders. In addition, underground organizations, among other things, collected information about the Red Army and relayed information to the Germans.

The unknown unidentified radio was broadcast again on August 13, in the Shilovichi area. “Operational-search” group captain Alekhine was instructed to find the exact location of its exit. Alekhine Pavel Vasilievich tries to find out something in the villages on his own. Two other members of the detachment, a mother cleaner, a senior lieutenant of twenty-five years, Evgeny Tamantsev and Lieutenant Andrey Blinov, a very young intern-cleaner, thoroughly comb the forest. Even circumstantial evidence, like nibbled

and discarded cucumbers or wrapping paper from German fat, may be useful for scouts. Alyokhin learned that on that day they saw Kazmier Pavlovsky, possibly cooperating with the fascists, and two military men near the Shilovichi forest. Tamantsev on the second day of searches found a place where the radio operator went on the air.
For the two suspicious military men discovered by Blinov, hunting begins. The search and the chase in Lida led nowhere. Blinov missed the sight of the man who met the suspects. But Alekhine does not abandon this version, without the absence of incontrovertible evidence. Later found out that the suspects are not agents, which means, according to Tamantsev, that they “pulled a pacifier” three days.

Without losing more time, Tamantsev and the officers seconded to him are taking the second version into development. They are monitoring the ambush behind the house of Julia Antyuk, in the hope that she will be visited by the suspect Pavlovsky. Tamantsev trains his inexperienced assistants, explaining to those on counterintelligence. He gave certain orders in case Pavlovsky appeared.

Nevertheless, when trying to take the live enemy agent Pavlovsky, he managed to commit suicide because of clumsy actions attached to the group of employees.
Lieutenant Colonel “En Fe”, head of the search department Polyakov is considered, if not Lord God, then his deputy for the search. This man’s opinion is very significant for Alyokhin’s group. Polyakov believes that the same wanted group is involved in the car hijacking and the murder of his driver. But this is only a hypothesis, not facts. General Egorov, the head of the department, and not only he expects results from Alekhine and Polyakov. It’s not the control of the bet.
Blinov was instructed to give an important task: to find a sapper blade, lost from a stolen car. He takes a company and combs the grove. Andrew does not intend to lead the command, but the whole day of active search has not yielded results. Upset Blinov does not know that just the same lack of results in the search and there is a positive response to the version of Polyakov.

Polyakov on the report to Yegorov and the authorities who arrived from Moscow expresses his conclusions about the confident reconnaissance group of the enemy. He believes that the cache where the radio is stored, somewhere in the Shilovichi forest. Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow there will be a real opportunity to detain one of the group members in red and receive from the captured agent the necessary information to arrest the entire criminal group and close the case. Nchalstvo from Moscow decides to organize an army operation. Egorov is absolutely against it. The military operation on its scale is capable of impressing the Stavka, but in fact only getting corpses. The Poles are also against. He has only a day, nevertheless, they began preparing for the military operation in parallel. The day is clearly not enough, but such is the direct order of Stalin.
The Supreme Commander-in-Chief is very restless and agitated. After acquaintance with the brief information on the case “Niemen”, he summoned the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs and State Security, the heads of the Main Directorate of Counterintelligence and contacted the front for “HF”. After all, it is a very important strategic operation for the Baltics. All the responsible will deserve the punishment if within a day they do not liquidate the leakage of classified information and will not detain the group “Niemen”.

From Alekhine Tamantsev expects a censure for failure with Pavlovsky. Alyokhin learns of his daughter’s illness and of the fact that the unique wheat he took out before the war was taken by mistake to the grain delivery. For him, this is a difficult day and he is distracted from heavy thoughts, to focus on the sapper blade, discovered by Tamantsev.
In the meantime, the real titanic activity is unfolding, the flywheel of the giant organization of emergency investigation is being unraveled. From all corners there are identities, officers, soldiers, service dogs and equipment. Suspicious people are checked at all railway stations. Enemy agents are often arranged there to gather information. Many are detained, although they are later released.
Andrei and, seconded to him, assistant commandant Anikushkin go to Shilovichi forest. This day was unsuccessful for Igor Anikushin. Tonight he was going to go to his beloved girl for his birthday in a brand-new, well-dressed dress uniform. And now, who fought at the front before the wound, the captain, because of a stupid task, should spend time on idlers-special workers. The assistant to the commandant especially touched the fact that the unpleasant captain and the stuttering yellow-faced lieutenant hide from him the essence of the operation.
The headquarters were placed in an uncomfortable and hot ownerless old building “stadol”, where fifteen generals and about fifty officers were stationed.

The radio operator told Polyakov’s group that three soldiers in the uniform were sent to him. There comes an order urgently to leave the forest, as at 17.00 begins the military operation. Tamantsev all of himself out of indignation. Alekhine still remains: Yegorov, giving the order, certainly did not have time to learn about the approach of three people to the ambush.
According to the agreement, Alyokhin and the assistant commandant approached the suspects to verify the documents. Tamantsev and Blinov remained in ambush for insurance. Alyokhin flawlessly plays out the role of a vigilant but simple serviceman, Tamantsev mentally patted him. In parallel, Alyokhin must mentally send out the data of these three on all search guidelines. The skinhead captain may turn out to be a particularly dangerous terrorist Mishchenko, who is a resident recruiter of German intelligence. Alyokhin must assess the truth of the documents, fix the nuances of the behavior of the suspects, inflame the situation and commit many more actions provoking even the dodgy “wolfhounds.” The documents were in perfect order. The three verifiable keep quiet until they heard of the intention to inspect the rucksack for the contents.

Anikushin closed Alyokhin from the review of the ambush at a decisive moment, and without giving importance and not osoznovoy danger of the operation. Despite this, Tamantsev reacted clearly and with lightning speed. At the time of the suspected attack on Alekhine and the wounding of that in the head, Blinov and Tamantsev jump out of ambush. A Blinov shot knocked the skinhead “captain” off his feet. Anticipating the actions of the enemy, Tamantsev hobbles a strong and strong “senior lieutenant.” The senior radio operator and Blinov detained the remaining “lieutenant.” Tamantsev managed to shout to the assistant commandant “Lie Down!”, But he still did not have time to react and was killed in a shootout. Despite the cynicism of the situation, Tamantsev took advantage of this as an excuse for intimidating a radio operator, promising to avenge the death of Anikushin.
