Summary of “Maggie’s Debut”

Every evening at the club “Shamrock” dances were arranged for the workers of the cardboard factory. Here came factory workers, bosom friends Anna and Maggie. Anna came with her boyfriend and took Maggie with her, an inconspicuous ugly woman with dull eyes, who always warmed the wall.

One day, Maggie appeared in a club with a chic guy, whom she introduced as Terry O’Sullivan. The girls besieged Maggie with requests to introduce Terry, and the young people after two years of blindness saw the light and noticed that Maggie was quite an attractive girl. Terry danced well, created an atmosphere of courtesy around him and invited the girl Dempsey Donovan twice to dance, which was not safe. Dempsey was the leader of the society and the handyman of Big Mike O’Sullivan, a man who enjoyed great authority with the police.

Dempsey went to Terry to find out where he came from and why he had one last name with Big Mike. Realizing that Terry’s name was not

O’Sullivan, Dempsey made a sign to his friends and Terry was taken out of the club to talk to him on the street. In the club “Shamrock” hand-to-hand fighting was not allowed. Maggie ran after them in horror. She had time to rush on Terry, who pulled out a stylet – they did not bring a cold weapon to the club “Shamrock” yet.

With tears, she confessed to Dempsey that Terry was not really O’Sullivan, he just wanted to visit the club, and she was sick of coming only with Anna and her boyfriend, so she went on deception. Now she will have to leave the club. In response, Dempsey asked Maggie if she would like to go to the next dance with him:

“You, Dempsey, ask me if you want to swim a duck.” stammered, answered Maggie. Gisselle Adan recounted

Employees of the cardboard factory every Saturday amused themselves at the dance. The entrance was not open to everyone. Visit the event and dance a lot could only employees of the factory and members of the sports society “Equal Chances.”

Anna and Maggie worked in the factory for a long time

and were best friends. Anna – a beautiful girl with a chic figure, attended the dance with her regular Cavalier Jimmy. Maggie could not boast of an outstanding appearance, so she was always alone at the dance, without a couple. The young people, absolutely, did not pay any attention to poor Maggie. But everything changed one case. At the dance, Maggie came with a guy of extraordinary beauty. Imagining her chevalier, like Terry O’Sullivan, the girl all night bathed in the rays of attention of others. Representatives of the fair sex lost their heads only from one glance at Terry and simply begged the happy Maggie to acquaint them more closely. But the representatives of a strong state, suddenly, realized that ugly woman had become a beauty. She was all shining with happiness, and this gave the girl a special sweetness. Terry danced flawlessly. Two times in a row he invited the girl Dempsey Donovan to waltz, who was the leader of the society. Up to this point, no one dared to do this. Demsey was in the service of the “Big Mike” and had special privileges. Donovan went to Demsey to find out who he really was, and why he had the same name as the “Big Mike”. Demsy was not scared and behaved quite defiantly. The young people took to the streets, the crowd froze in anticipation of the fight.

But then Maggie appeared. Bitterly sobbing, she told everyone that, in fact, her boyfriend is not the one who introduced himself. But this is only her fault. Poor thing so tired of loneliness that she asked the Italian Tony Spinelli to play the role of her gentleman and spend a Saturday evening at the dance. As you know, strangers are not allowed here, so Tony had to “change” the name. Maggie was very embarrassed to talk about this, she was ashamed of her deed, but Dempsey’s reaction was unpredictable. He invited Maggie to the dance next Saturday.
