“Ugly Duckling” Andersen in brief

Ducks have hatched ducks. One of them was late, and outwardly failed. The old duck frightened her mother that it was a turkey, not otherwise, but he swam better than other ducklings. All the inhabitants of the bird’s dvor attacked the ugly duckling, even the poultryman pushed away from the fodder. Mother first interceded, but then she also took up arms against the ugly son. Once the duckling could not stand it and ran to the swamp, where the wild geese lived, whose acquaintance ended sadly: although two young geese offered to be friends with a wonderful duckling, they were immediately killed by hunters. At night, he reached the hut, where the old woman, a cat and a chicken lived. The woman sheltered him, blindly taking for a fat duck, but the cat and the chicken, who considered themselves to be the best half of the world, poisoned the new roommate, for he could not bear eggs and purr. When the duckling was drawn to swim, the chicken declared that it was all from stupidity, and the freak went to live on the lake, where everyone still laughed at him. Once he saw swans and fell in love with them as he had never loved anyone.

In winter the duckling froze in the ice; The peasant brought home, warmed up, but frightened the chick hawked and fled. All winter he sat in the reeds. In the spring he took off and saw floating swans. The duckling ventured to surrender to the will of beautiful birds and saw his reflection: he too became a swan! And according to the children and the swans themselves, the most beautiful and young. They had not dreamed of this happiness when he was an ugly duckling.
