“The problem of compassion”

Each of us sometimes has a choice: to show sympathy for another person, to help him in his misfortune, or to close his eyes to what is happening around and not to waste his energy on those who are “outsiders” for us.
The author of the text is convinced that sympathy is “a great human ability and need,” since a person who does not know how to show kindness and generosity towards others will not stand his own tests and will meet them “pitiful and helpless.”

I can not disagree with the position of S. Lvov, because I believe that the mercy and compassion shown by us always reflect best on the world around us and on ourselves.

For example, in the story of A. Platonov’s “Unknown Flower”, the children helped a small flower to survive on a dusty abandoned wasteland, blossom into full force and leave behind other beautiful flowers. This example shows how a once-shown kindness can bring remarkable fruits in the future.

And, on the contrary, the absence of mercy can cause a person to suffer from mental anguish. Such a fate befell Athos, the hero of the work of A. Dumas “Three Musketeers.” Learning that his beloved wife is a criminal, he did not hesitate to execute her, even without giving her a chance to at least somehow justify herself. The shadow of this terrible act hung over him for the rest of his life, and so he could never be truly happy.

Show sympathy or stay away – these are the questions that we often have to answer in our lives. Everyone has the right to make his own choice, but one must always remember one thing: “selfishness, callousness, indifference, heartlessness cruelly avenge themselves.”
