“The Magic Headboard” by Shen Jiji in summary

In ancient times, a certain Taoist monk, the elder Lui, who comprehended the mystery of immortality, met at the inn with a boy named Lou. They began to talk, and the young man began to complain about his unfortunate fate: he studied for so many years, and everything vegetates without a great career. Then he began to sleep, and the elder offered him his head of green jade with holes at the sides. No sooner had the young man’s head bowed, as the lights dawned, the holes began to expand, and, entering inside, the young man found himself near his own house.

Soon he married, began to grow rich day by day, and then in the bureaucratic career succeeded. The emperor himself put forward him. Managing the province of Shen, Lu favored local farmers with an irrigation canal. Later he rose to the governor of the capital district.

There was a military unrest in the country. However, on the battlefield, Lu was fortunate and defeated the enemy. The emperor generously awarded him with ranks and titles. However, envious people were not asleep. The Emperor was informed that Lu had planned treason, and his highest command was to imprison him. Luke regretted at that time about his youthful striving for service!

Many times he was trapped in the vicissitudes of his career, but every time he rose again, until he grew old. He decided to ask the tsar to resign himself, only he refused. Here, Lou died.

And at that very moment the young man woke up at the magic head. Now he knew the futility of his dreams, and wealth, loss and luck. The young man thanked the old man and with a bow withdrew.
