Summary The village

William Faulkner
The village of the
French Balka was called part of the fertile river valley twenty miles southeast of Jefferson, Joknapatofa County, Mississippi. Once it was a colossal plantation, the remains of which – the box of a huge house, the ruined stables and barracks for slaves, overgrown gardens – were now called the estate of the Old Frenchman and belonged along with the best lands in the district, a bench, a cotton gin and a forge to the sixty-year-old Bill Varner, these places. Neighbors of it were more and more poor farmers, self-cultivating their plots, and very poor tenants. By his great laziness, the management of the shop, the cotton wiper and the tenant’s allotments, Bill, entrusted the ninth of his sixteen children, Jody.
To this Jodi Warner somehow in the evening in the shop appeared a plain elderly man, introduced himself as Ebom Snoups and said that he wanted to rent a farm. Jody did not mind what he regretted when he found

out that Snoups was listed, although no one could prove it, some burnt sheds, so he took offense for some reason not to please the owners. About this Jody told VK Ratlif, a traveling trader sewing machines, in his britzka constantly wheeled around the district and therefore possessed a wealth of valuable information, thanks to which, in addition to his all-recognized insight, in addition to the main product, he successfully traded cattle, land and all sorts of things belongings. Not wishing to endure damage, Jody began to offer various concessions and as a result was compelled to take the son of the old Snoups, Flem, the clerk in his shop, than was the beginning of the victorious invasion of the Snopes on Franzuzov Bulk, Yoknapatofu, and then on Jefferson. Victorious and unstoppable because the Snowses were people of a particular breed – all of them, with rare exceptions, were distinguished by boundless greed, strong grip, perseverance, and lack of certain qualities that seemed to be inherently inherent in human nature; in addition, Snops was very much, and it was worth one of them to climb a little higher on the
public staircase, as in the liberated place was another Snoups, who, in turn, pulled more and more new relatives with him. differed boundless greed, strong grip, perseverance, as well as the absence of some qualities that seemingly inherently inherent in human nature; in addition, Snops was very much, and it was worth one of them to climb a little higher on the public staircase, as in the liberated place was another Snoups, who, in turn, pulled more and more new relatives with him. differed boundless greed, strong grip, perseverance, as well as the absence of some qualities that seemingly inherently inherent in human nature; in addition, Snops was very much, and it was worth one of them to climb a little higher on the public staircase, as in the liberated place was another Snoups, who, in turn, pulled more and more new relatives with him.
Very soon, it was not clear from the party who Snoops or Warner was the true owner of the shop, and a little later in the hands of Flem somehow turned out the Warner smithy, and in it two Snoups, Eck and AO settled. A little more time passed, and Flem moved from his rented apartment to Warner’s house.
The youngest daughter of Bill Warner had not yet reached the age of thirteen, but at the same time, Yulia was least like an angular teenage girl. With her perfection of forms and the abundance of flesh, she could have been a worthy participant in the Dionysian processions, however, or it was a task beyond the power of anyone, for it grew irreparable, boundless lazy, as if not only was not involved in the surrounding world, but lived in a self-sufficient timeless loneliness of a being who initially knew all the possible mud spine. When Yulia was eight, Jodie insisted that she go to school, but for this he had to go to school and practice with his sister on his horse, without which, as he soon realized, it would still be impossible to do, because not her, eight-year, already with might and main, as though one, stray slackers, short days on the terrace of the Warner’s shop. Yulia was not destined to finish her studies. One day, the teacher Labowe disappeared from school and from the French Beam. Labowe went to the teacher only for the opportunity to pay for his studies at the university, but at the end she remained in school, bewitched by the volatile Juno, at the same time utterly obscene and inviolable, although she clearly understood that sooner or later something would happen that he would be defeated and destroyed. And so it happened: after the lessons alone with Yulia, he attacked her, painfully embraced her, but she silently and resolutely freed herself, poured him with contempt and quietly went out into the street, where her brother was waiting for her. Even making sure that Jula did not say anything to Jody, Labow immediately ran away, and since then no one has ever seen him. Yulia was not destined to finish her studies. Like the wasps around the ripe peach, Yulia was constantly spinning around – when she turned fourteen, fifteen-seventeen-year-olds, the next year – already almost adult men of eighteen or twenty; the seventeenth year of Yuly’s life, it was the turn of independent people with their own trotters and spans. Of these, she probably singled out the young planter Hawke McCarran, for which the village adorers of Yulia tried to teach him a lesson and somehow in a deserted place they stopped the span in which McCaron drove her home from the dance, but he fought off a whole gang of them, and that the same night for the broken arm in the fight, Julia brought as a gift to her knight what, with all the desire, she could not give to anyone else. Three months later, all the spans, including McCarronov, as one, disappeared without a trace from the surroundings of the French Beam, and a few days later, Bill Warner drove his daughter and his clerk to Jefferson, where he quickly married Yulia and Flem Snoups, and also straightened out a gift for the estate of the Old Frenchman. Immediately after that, the young went to Texas. Idiot Hayk Snoops, cousin of Flem, had his own Yunona, the cow of Mink Snoups, whom Bill Warner had awarded to a farmer in Houston for allowing Mink to let her from month to month graze on Houston pasture. Houston always drove the lover from his passion, and Ike led the cow away, since the idiot also has a desire for happiness, but the fugitives are returned and separated. Seeing how, however, how hurt Ike offended by God, Ratliff persuaded Houston to give the cow to Aiku, and both of them settled in the stall at Mrs. Littlejohn’s inn, for which Ike did some dirty work on the au pair. But from this began to benefit the new Snopes, Lamp, who took the place of the clerk in the shop after Flem left – he broke the board in the back of the stall and allowed neighboring farmers to admire the joint life of Hayk and his unusual friend for a moderate fee. Rathleaf always had a high human dignity, and he decided to stop mocking the idiot, for which he prompted the two remaining interested Snoups – Eka and AO – supposedly an old way to rid the kinsman of unnatural passion: he had to feed Hayk with the meat of this same cow, but for this it should first be redeemed, and Snouts reluctantly folded, and AO, the real Snopes, shamelessly furnished Eka-Snoups, as it later turned out, not quite the present. who took the place of the clerk in the shop after Flem left – he broke the board in the back wall of the stall and allowed neighboring farmers to admire the joint life of Hayk and his unusual friend for a moderate fee. This transaction was not the only continuation of the story with the cow, since Mink Snoups, the only one of the clan who did not have the ability to make money, but at the same time, perhaps the most stubborn and fierce of all Snops, could not forgive Houston for capturing cattle. One day he took a gun and laid down Houston on the forest path with a shot in the chest. Mink’s body was hidden in a decaying log from the inside and at first thought that he had nothing to fear, since Houston was completely alone – his young wife was tragically and absurdly dead. But there was still a dog, which for the night became heartbreakingly howling at the place where the body of the owner was hidden. And besides, Minka’s wife, having immediately guessed what had happened, went to the village and there assured everyone that Mink was not guilty of anything, which, of course, aroused the suspicions of the sheriff.
For several days Mink sat on his farm in anticipation of money to escape, but Lamp, whom he had hoped for, did not make itself felt, and then Mink went to the village. Rodic was extremely surprised that Mink had not yet escaped – on the day of the disappearance of Houston, Lamp saw in the farmer’s wallet at least fifty dollars and was confident that Mink used this money to get away. Realizing that the money was still in the pockets of the deceased, Lamp wanted to join in with his cousin and went with him to the farm, but there Mink tied him up, and he went into the woods, with great difficulty extracted Houston from the pack and carried into the river. But when he returned behind the fallen body of the corpse, a sheriff with his assistants was waiting for him at the deck. In the Jeffersonian prison, Mink repeated and repeated that he had done everything right, but, unfortunately, Houston began to fall apart…
At the end of winter, Yulia returned to the French Balka with a baby that looked older than the supposed age. Flemma did not exist, as everyone thought, he did not want to spend money on Mink’s recovery and waited until everything was over. But before the trial he showed up, and not alone, but with some Texan and a herd of motley unbroken Texas horses. The news of the opportunity to make a cheap purchase flew around the whole district in a flash, and the next day the Texan started trading. Soon the deal was over, the Texan got the money and was like that, and all the horses in the pen had their owners, who, however, had to catch and run the newly acquired property themselves. It was worthwhile, however, the farmer to enter the corral, as the horses rushed from him, and as a result, everything ended in several mutilations, not one of the horses was ever caught, and for a long time they themselves roamed the surrounding hills. Flem got a great profit, but he answered all the claims that the goods were not his, but the Texan. Everyone was convinced that this was not true, but no one could prove it.
It was only Mink’s fault that Flem did not intervene, and the judges in Jefferson sentenced him to life imprisonment. The last act of Flem Snoups in the French Balk, which allowed him to leave this place and move to Jefferson, is remarkable in that this time he managed to conduct VK Ratliff himself. The matter is that between farmers for a long time there lived a certainty that the former masters of the estate of the Old Frenchman buried untold treasures in the garden before the arrival of the northerners. And so Ratlif with Burkrayt and Henry Armsteed, local farmers, found out that someone was ransacking the manor garden night after night. The first time they tried their luck, each of the three fell into a bag with twenty-five full-weight silver dollars. Wanting to get rid of competitors, comrades immediately the next day, they forced Flem to sell them a farm – Ratliff it was worth a share in a Jefferson’s restaurant, Armstydt mortgage on the farm, Burkright paid out in cash. In a couple of days, however, it became clear that he dug in the garden himself Flem and he threw money, – among the coins, there was not one minted before the war. Ratliff and Burkeit immediately spat on this matter, Armströd completely broke off and continued to dig deep holes day after day. Flem Snoups on the way to Jefferson looked to admire him for this occupation. Armstead completely broke free and continued to dig the deep holes day after day.
