Summary “The song about the petrel” Gorky

“Song of the Stormy Petrel” was written in Nizhny Novgorod after the return of M. Gorky on March 12, 1901 from a trip to St. Petersburg and Moscow. It was published in 1901 in the journal “Life” as an independent work after being banned by the censorship of the whole story. At that time, the writer was associated with the Moscow organization Iskra, conducted revolutionary propaganda among students and workers, and initiated wide public protests against the persecution of students, “… in my heart spring dawns burn and I breathe in my chest, – he wrote in the spring of 1901 L. Andreev. “Song” was written in response to the bloody dispersal of a student demonstration at the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg on March 4, 1901.

Initially, it was not conceived as an independent work, but was included in the satirical story “Spring melodies”, where different layers of society were depicted as birds. A representative of

the younger generation – Chizh (apparently a student) – sings an extremely exciting song “On the Stormy Petrel”. Censorship forbade printing the story completely, but the song of the chizhika forethoughtly allowed (wholly “Spring melodies” were illegally printed on the hectograph by Nizhny Novgorod radicals). Before sending to print Gorky changed the final phrase. Instead of “Wait, the storm is coming soon!” put “Let the storm come stronger!”. As a result, on April 17, Gorky and his crony friend, the poet Skitalets, were arrested and then deported from Nizhny Novgorod. Seeing him turned into a mass demonstration. In May, the magazine was closed.

The publication of the magazine with the “Song of the Stormy Petrel” caused a stir among the gendarmes. Then the song “The Stormy Petrel” was quoted in full and the “strong impression” she produced in literary circles was mentioned. After the release of the “Song of the Stormy Petrel”, the author himself was called “petrel” and “bureglashata”.

“Song” was one of the reasons for the prohibition of the magazine – the number in which it was printed was the last. However, the distribution of the work did not end there. “Song of the Stormy Petrel” was included in collections of revolutionary poems and songs that were published abroad. Becoming in the years of the first Russian revolution a military password, “Song of the Stormy Petrel” evoked hatred in the reactionary camp.

In the advanced circles of Russian society, “The Song of the Stormy Petrel” was adopted as a fiery revolutionary proclamation; the work was widely distributed through illegal publications. Bolshevik propaganda repeatedly used the images of the “Song of the Stormy Petrel”, which, often, the product is perceived only in a political and temporal context. However, in the “Song of the Stormy Petrel,” besides the summoning of the storm, the eternal theme of loneliness of the brave hero sounds and the opposition of this courage of narrow-minded cowardice and limited gray life. In the years of struggle against the autocracy, “The Song of the Stormy Petrel” was one of the mighty means of revolutionary propaganda.

Over the gray plains of the sea, the wind gathers clouds. Between the clouds and the sea proudly thunderstorm Burevestnik, a black lightning like. Then with the wing of the wave touching, then with an arrow soaring to the clouds, he screams, and – the clouds hear joy in the bold cry of the bird. In this cry – thirst for the storm! The power of anger, the flame of passion and the certainty of victory are heard by the clouds in this cry. The seagulls moan before the storm – moan, rush over the sea and at the bottom of it they are ready to hide their terror before the storm. And the grouse also groan – they, the loons, can not enjoy the battle of life: the thunder of blows frightens them. The stupid penguin timidly hides the fat body in the cliffs. Only the proud Stormy Pet will boldly and freely over the gray sea from the foam! Everything is darker and lower than the clouds drop over the sea, and they sing and the waves rush to the height towards the thunder. The thunder roars. In the foam of anger, the waves moan, arguing with the wind.

The stormy petrel screams with a cry, a black lightning like a bolt pierces the clouds, a foaming wave of wings rips. Here he is worn like a demon, a proud, black demon of a storm, and he laughs and cries. He laughs over the clouds, he sobs with joy! In anger of thunder, – a sensitive demon, – he has long tiredness hears, he is sure that they will not hide the clouds of the sun, – no, they will not hide! The wind howls. The thunder roars. Blue flames blaze flocks of clouds over the abyss of the sea. The sea catches arrows of lightning and extinguishes in its depths. Exactly fiery serpents, wind into the sea, disappearing, reflections of these lightning. “The storm!” The storm is coming soon! This bold Stormy Petrel proudly throws itself between the lightning above the roaring sea; then the prophet of victory screams: – Let the storm come stronger.
