MOLIERE
The philistine in the nobility
It would seem, what else does the respectable bourgeois, Mr. Jourdain, need? Money, family, health – everything you can wish for, he has. So in fact, no, thought the Jourdain to become an aristocrat, become like the noble masters. His mania caused a lot of inconvenience and excitement to the household, but was in the hands of a host of tailors, hairdressers and teachers who promised through their art to make a brilliant nobleman from Jourdain. Here and now two teachers – dances and music – together with the pupils waited for occurrence of the owner of the house. Jourdain invited them to decorate the dinner, which he arranged in honor of one titled person, with a cheerful and refined performance.
Presenting himself to a musician and a dancer, Jourdain first of all suggested that they evaluate their exotic robe – this, according to his tailor, is known all morning – and the new livery of his lackeys.

From the evaluation of the taste of Jourdain, apparently, the size of the future fee of connoisseurs was directly dependent, therefore the reviews were enthusiastic.
The robe, however, was the reason for some hitching, since Jourdain could not decide for a long time how it was easier for him to listen to music – in him or without him. After listening to the serenade, he found it virgin and, in turn, performed a brisk street song, for which he again received praise and invitations, among other sciences, to engage in music with dances. To accept this invitation, Jourdain was persuaded by the assurances of the teachers that every noble gentleman always learns both music and dancing.
Pastoral dialogue was prepared for the upcoming reception by the music teacher. Jourdain, in general, he liked: since you can not do without these eternal cowherds and cowherds – all right, let them sing to themselves. Presented by the teacher of dances and his students, Jourdain fell in love with the ballet.
Encouraged by the success of the employer, the teachers decided to forge the iron while it is hot: the
musician advised Jourdain to arrange weekly home concerts, as he said, in all aristocratic houses; the dance teacher immediately began to teach him the finest of the dance – minuet.
Exercises in elegant gestures were interrupted by a fencing master, a teacher of science of science – the ability to strike, and most do not receive such. The dance teacher and his fellow musician unanimously disagreed with the fencer’s statement about the unconditional priority of the ability to fight over their centuries-old arts. The people got to the point, word for word – and a couple of minutes later a brawl began between the three teachers.
When the teacher of philosophy came, Jourdain was delighted – to whom, as a philosopher, not to admonish the fighting. He readily embarked on the cause of reconciliation: he remembered Seneca, warned opponents of anger that humiliated human dignity, advised him to take up philosophy, this first of the sciences… He overdid it. He was beaten on a par with others.
A battered, but nevertheless avoided mutilation, a philosophy teacher, eventually, was able to begin the lesson. Since Jourdain refused to practice as a logic – the words there are too tricky – and ethical – why should he learn to moderate passions, if it does not stop, then nothing stops him – the learned man began to dedicate it to the secrets of spelling.
Practicing the pronunciation of vowel sounds, Jourdain rejoiced as a child, but when the first delights passed, he revealed to the teacher of philosophy a big secret: he, Jourdain, is in love with a certain high society lady, and he needs to write a note to this lady. Philosopher it was a couple of trifles – in prose, in verse. However, Jourdain asked him to do without these very prose and poetry. Did the venerable bourgeois know that one of the most startling discoveries here was waiting for him-it turned out, when he shouted to the servant: “Nicole, give shoes and a nightcap”, from his lips, to think only, pure prose came forth!
However, even in the field of literature Jourden was still not a shit – as much as the teacher of philosophy tried, he could not improve the text written by Jourdain: “Beautiful marquise!
The philosopher had to retire when Jourdain was reported about the tailor. He brought a new suit, sewn, of course, according to the latest court fashion. The apprentices of the tailor, dancing, updated and, without interrupting the dance, dressed Jourdain in it. At the same time, his wallet suffered a great deal: the apprentices did not skimp on flattering “Your Grace”, “Your Grace” and even “Grace”, and extremely touched Jourdain – on tips.
In a new suit, Jourdain set out to stroll through the streets of Paris, but the spouse strongly opposed this intention-and already half a city laughs at Jourdain. In general, in her opinion, it was time for him to change his mind and leave his silly quirks: what, I wonder, Jourdain fencing, if he does not intend to kill anyone? why learn dancing, when your feet are already about to be refused?
Refuting the senseless arguments of the woman, Jourdain tried to impress her with the maid with the fruits of her scholarship, but without much success: Nicole calmly uttered the sound of “y”, not even suspecting that she was pulling out her lips and bringing the upper jaw to the bottom, and she rapier Jourdain has a few nyxes, which he did not reflect, because the unenlightened maid was pricking not according to the rules.
In all the stupidities that her husband indulged, Mrs. Jourdain blamed the noble gentlemen, who had recently started to make friends with him. For the court dandies, Jourdain was an ordinary milk cow, and he, in turn, was confident that friendship with them gives him significant – as they are there – pre-ro-ha-tiv.
Earl Dorant was one of these high-society friends of Jourdain. As soon as he entered the living room, this aristocrat gave several refined compliments to the new suit, and then briefly mentioned that this morning he was talking about Jourdain in the royal bedchamber. Having prepared such a manner of soil, the Earl recalled that he owes his friend fifteen thousand eight hundred livres, so that the direct reason to lend him another two thousand two hundred – for an even account. In gratitude for this and subsequent loans, Dorant took upon himself the role of mediator in cardiac affairs between Jourdain and the object of his worship – the Marquisa Dorimena, for which a dinner with a performance was initiated.
Mrs. Jourdain, so as not to interfere, on that day was sent to dinner for her sister. She did not know anything about her husband’s plan, herself was preoccupied with the arrangement of her daughter’s fate: Lucille seemed to reciprocate the tender feelings of a young man named Cleonte, who, as a son-in-law, was very fit for Mrs. Jourdain. At her request, Nicole, interested in the marriage of the young lady, since she herself was going to marry the servant Cleonte, Covel, led the youth. Ms. Jourdain immediately sent him to her husband to ask for the daughter’s hands.
However, the first and, in fact, the only requirement of Jourdain to the competitor of the hand, Lucille Cleonte did not answer – he was not a nobleman, whereas his father wished to make his daughter at worst a marquise or even a duchess. Having received a decisive refusal, Cleonte was dejected, but Coviel believed that everything was not lost. The faithful servant decided to play with Jourdain a joke, the benefit of his friends-actors, and the corresponding costumes were at hand.
In the meantime, they reported the arrival of Count Dorant and the Marquise Dorimena. The Count did not bring the lady to dinner at all because of the desire to make the owner happy at home: he had long been caring for the widow of the Marquis, but had not had the opportunity to see her neither in her nor in herself-it might have compromised Dorimen. In addition, all the insane expenditure of Jourdain on gifts and various entertainments for her, he deftly attributed to himself, what in the end won the woman’s heart.
Fairly amusing the noble guests with an elaborate clumsy bow and the same salutatory speech, Jourdain invited them for a sumptuous table.
The Marquise was not without pleasure absorbing the delicious dishes to the accompaniment of exotic compliments of the eccentric bourgeois, when all the splendor was unexpectedly disturbed by the appearance of the angry Mrs. Jourdain. Now she realized why she wanted to get her to dinner with her sister – so that her husband could safely drain money with extraneous women. Jourdain and Dorant began to assure her that the Count was giving dinner in honor of the marquise, and he paid for everything, but their assurances in no way diminished the ardor of the insulted wife. After her husband, Mrs. Jourdain took a guest who should be ashamed to bring discord to an honest family. Embarrassed and offended, the marquis rose from the table and left the hosts; Dorant retreated after her.
Only the noblemen left, as it was reported about the new visitor. He was disguised as Coviel, who introduced himself as the friend of Mr. Jourdain’s father. The deceased father of the owner of the house was, as he said, not a merchant, as everyone kept saying, but the most that neither is a real nobleman. Koviel’s calculation was justified: after such a statement, he could tell anything, without fear that Jourdain would doubt the veracity of his speeches.
Koviel told Jourdain that his good friend, the son of the Turkish sultan, who was madly in love with his, Jourdain, daughter, had arrived in Paris. The son of the Sultan wants to ask for Lucile’s hands, and so that his father-in-law was worthy of a new family, he decided to dedicate it to mamamushi, in our opinion – paladins. Jourdain was ecstatic.
The son of the Turkish sultan was represented by the disguised Cleonte. He spoke in an eerie gibberish, which Koviel supposedly translated into French. With the chief Turk arrived lay muftis and dervishes, who had a very good time during the dedication ceremony: it came out very colorful, with Turkish music, songs and dances, as well as with ritual beatings initiated by sticks.
Dorant, dedicated to the design of Coviel, was finally able to persuade Dorimen to return, tempted by the opportunity to enjoy a fun show, and then another and an excellent ballet. The Count and the Marquise with the most serious kind congratulated Jourdain on conferring on him a high title, the same was impatient to deliver his daughter to the son of the Turkish sultan as soon as possible. Lucille at first did not want to go for any foolish Turk, but, as soon as she recognized the disguised Cleonte, she immediately agreed, pretending to obediently fulfill her daughter’s duty. Ms. Jourdain, in turn, harshly stated that the Turkish scarecrow did not see her daughter as her own ears. But when Koviel had to whisper a couple of words in her ear, and milf changed her anger to mercy.
Jourdain solemnly joined the hands of the young man and the girl, giving a parental blessing for their marriage, and then sent for a notary. Services of the same notary decided to take advantage of another pair – Dorant and Dorimenoi. In anticipation of the representative of the law, all present had a glorious time, enjoying the ballet set by the dance teacher.
