Summary of “Youth” Bunin

Bunin – a great Russian writer of the XIX – XX centuries. His works have always been restrained and rhythmic. In the poem Bunin always affirms not the importance of events, but their philosophical meaning, a theme inspired by life itself.

The poem “Youth” was written by Bunin in 1916. This poem is a description of nature, and the description of nature is masterful, because nature was always one of Bunin’s main themes of creativity. In the poem there is no plot, but this is a feature of the prose and poetry of the writer. “Youth” consists of 2 stanzas, referring to different time intervals. The first, as if, takes us to the past, to memories, perhaps, about childhood, perhaps, about what was seen or experienced by the author many years ago. In this stanza, the author uses a cross rhyme. The second stanza refers to the present or near past of the writer. It uses a ring rhyme. The use of such different periods leads to a contrast between

the two life spans. In the poem we see a description of the 2 seasons of the year – spring and autumn. “

In the autumn we get reading: “in a dry forest”, where “under the feet of a leaf rustle oak,” “life as a steppe is empty and great.” A mood of sadness and despondency is created. In the poem there is an anaphora; the author begins each new line of the poem with the union “and”. This expands the boundaries of the poetic world of the poem. Despite the fact that the poem is called “Youth”, Bunin never uses this word in the work. The writer does not talk about his youth, but only conveys feelings and memories of this period of his life. Some lines of the poem are abstract, for example, the last: “And the heart in secret joy longs for that life as a steppe is empty and large”, which allows the reader to comprehend them. “So know and love nature, as Bunin knows how – very few people know how! Thanks to this love, the poet looks vigilant and far away, and his colorful and auditory impressions are rich. His world is – primarily – the world of visual and auditory impressions and related experiences. “
