Les Miserables
In 1815, the bishop of the city of Dinja was Charles-Francois Míriel, nicknamed for good deeds by Zhelanný – Bienvenu. This unusual man in his youth had a lot of love adventures and led a secular life – but the Revolution has broken everything. Mr. Míriel went to Italy, from where he returned as a priest. On the whim of Napoleon, the old parish priest holds the bishop’s throne. His pastoral work begins with the fact that he concedes the beautiful building of the episcopal palace to the local hospital, and he himself moves to a small small house. He pays his whole salary to the poor. Both the rich and the poor are knocking at the door of the bishop: some come for charity, others bring it. This holy man enjoys universal respect – he is granted healing and forgiving.
In the first days of October 1815 in Dinh is a dusty traveler – a stocky, dense man in the prime of life. His beggarly clothes and a sullen weather-beaten

face produce a repulsive impression. First of all, he goes to the mayor’s office, and then tries to get settled somewhere for the night. But he is driven from everywhere, although he is ready to pay a full coin. This man’s name is Jean Valjean. He was in prison for nineteen years – for having stolen a loaf of bread for the seven hungry children of his widowed sister. Festering, he turned into a wild, hunted beast – with his “yellow” passport for him, there is no place in this world. Finally, a woman, having compassion on him, advises him to go to the bishop. After listening to the convict’s grim confession, Monsieur Bienvenu orders to feed him in the guest room. In the middle of the night, Jean Valjean wakes up: six silver cutlery are not giving him peace – the only bishop’s wealth that was kept in the master bedroom. Valjean tiptoes to the bishop’s bed, breaks the locker with silver and wants to smash the head of the good shepherd with a massive candlestick, but some incomprehensible force keeps him. And he flies through the window.
In the morning
the gendarmes lead the fugitive to the bishop – this suspicious person was detained with obviously stolen silver. Monseigneur can send Valzhan to life for hard labor. Instead, Mr. Miriel takes out two silver candlesticks, which yesterday’s guest allegedly forgot. The last message of the bishop is to use a gift to become an honest man. The shocked convict hastily leaves town. In his coarsened soul there is a difficult painful work. At sunset, he mechanically takes a forty-souco coin from the boy he met. Only when the kid with a bitter cry runs away, Valzhan gets the meaning of his action: he falls heavily on the ground and weeps bitterly – for the first time in nineteen years.
In 1818, the town of Montreuil thrives, and it owes to this one person: three years ago an unknown person settled here, who managed to improve the traditional local craft – the manufacture of an artificial jet. Uncle Madeleine not only got rich himself, but also helped to make a fortune for many others. Until recently, the city was raging unemployment – now everyone forgot about the need. Uncle Madeleine was distinguished by unusual modesty – neither the parliamentary chair nor the Order of the Legion of Honor at all attracted him. But in 1820 he had to become a mayor: a simple old woman shamed him, saying that it was ashamed to back off, if an opportunity had to be done to do a good deed. And Uncle Madeleine turned into Mr. Madeleine. Before him, everyone was deceived, and only police agent Javer looked at him with extreme suspicion. In the soul of this man there was only a place for two feelings, brought to the extreme, – respect for power and hatred of rebellion. A judge in his eyes could never be mistaken, and a criminal could be corrected. He himself was blameless until disgust. Sleight was the meaning of his life.
Once, Javer repentantly informs the mayor that he must go to the nearby town of Arras – there will be a convict of the former convict Jean Valjean, who immediately robbed the boy after his release. Before, Javer thought that Jean Valjean was hiding under the guise of Monsieur Madeleine – but it was a mistake. Having released Javera, the mayor falls into a heavy meditation, and then leaves the city. At trial in Arras, the defendant stubbornly refuses to recognize himself as Jean Valjean and claims that his name is Uncle Shanmatier and there is no fault behind him. The judge is preparing to make a guilty verdict, but then an unknown person gets up and announces that he is Jean Valjean, and the defendant must be released. The news spread quickly that the venerable mayor, Mr. Madeleine, was a runaway convict. Javer triumphs – he deftly placed the snares of the criminal.
The jury decided to send Valzhan to the galleys in Toulon for life. Once on board the ship “Orion”, he saves the life of the sailor who has fallen off the rye, and then throws himself into the sea from a dizzy height. In the Toulon newspapers a message appears that convict Jean Valjean has drowned. However, after some time he is declared in the town of Montfermil. He is vowed here. When he was his mayor, he treated the woman who gave birth to the illegitimate child excessively and repented, remembering the merciful bishop Miriel. Before his death, the phantine asks him to take care of his girl Cosetta, which she had to give to the innkeepers Tenardieu. The couple of Tenardier embodied a cunning and anger, combined with marriage. Each of them tortured the girl in her own way: she was beaten and forced to work half to death – and this was her fault; she walked barefoot in winter and in rags – the reason for this was her husband. After taking Cosette, Jean Valjean settles in the most remote outskirts of Paris. He taught the little boy literacy and did not interfere with her playing in full – she became the meaning of the life of a former convict who saved money earned in the production of a jet. But Inspector Javer does not give him rest there. He arranges a night raid: Jean Valjean is saved by a miracle, imperceptibly jumping over a dead wall into the garden – it turned out to be a female monastery. Cosette is taken to a monastery boarding house, and her adoptive father becomes an assistant gardener. But Inspector Javer does not give him rest there. A respectable bourgeois, Mr. Zhilnorman lives with his grandson, who wears a different name – the boy’s name is Marius Pommersi. Marius’s mother died, and he never saw his father: Mr. Zilnorman referred to his son-in-law as a “Loirite robber”, as the Imperial troops were withdrawn to the Loire. Georges Ponmersi reached the rank of colonel and became a Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honor. He almost died in the Battle of Waterloo – he was taken from the battlefield looter, wiping the pockets of the wounded and killed. All this Marius learns from his father’s death message, which turns into a titanic figure for him. The former royalist becomes a fiery admirer of the emperor and begins to almost hate his grandfather. Marius with a scandal leaves the house – he has to live in extreme poverty, almost in poverty, but he feels free and independent. During daily walks through the Luxembourg garden, the young man sees a handsome old man, who is always accompanied by a girl of about fifteen. Marius fervently falls in love with a stranger, but the natural shyness prevents him from getting to know her. The old man, noticing Marius’s close attention to his companion, leaves the apartment and ceases to appear in the garden. It seems to the unhappy young man that he has lost his beloved forever. But one day he hears a familiar voice behind the wall – where there is a large family of Jondrets. Looking in the gap, he sees an old man from the Luxembourg garden – he promises to bring money in the evening. Obviously, Zondrett has the opportunity to blackmail him: the interested Marius overhears how the villain conspires with members of the “Cock’s Hour” gang – the old man wants to arrange a trap to take everything from him. Marius notifies the police. Inspector Javer thanks him for his help and hands out pistols, just in case. In front of the young man, a terrible scene is played out – innkeeper Tenardieu, hiding under the name of Jondreth, hunted down Jean Valjean. Marius is ready to intervene, but here police officers led by Javer break into the room. While the inspector is dealing with the bandits, Jean Valjean jumps out the window – only then does Javer understand that he has missed a much larger game.
In 1832, Paris was engulfed in ferment. Friends of Marius rave revolutionary ideas, but the young man occupies another – he continues to look for a girl from the Luxembourg garden. Finally, happiness smiled at him. With the help of one of Tenardier’s daughters, the young man finds Cosette and confesses to her in love. It turned out that Cosetta also long loved Marius. Jean Valjean does not suspect anything. Most of all, the former convict is concerned that Tenardieu is clearly watching their quarter. Comes on June 4. In the city an uprising breaks out – barricades are built everywhere. Marius can not leave his comrades. Worried Cosette wants to send him news, and Jean Valjean finally opens his eyes: his little one has grown up and found love. Despair and jealousy smother the old convict, and he goes to the barricade, which is defended by the young Republicans and Marius. They fall into the hands of a disguised Jover – the detective is seized, and Jean Valjean again meets his sworn enemy. He has the full opportunity to deal with a man who caused him so much evil, but a noble convict prefers to release a policeman. Meanwhile, government troops are advancing: the barricade defenders are dying one after another – among them the glorious little boy Gavrosh, the true Parisian tomboy. Marius shot his collarbone with a rifle shot – he is in the full power of Jean Valzhan. The old convict takes Marius off the battlefield on his shoulders. Everywhere the punishers are waving, and Valzhan descends under the earth – into terrible sewage drains. After much toil, he gets to the surface only to find himself face to face with Javer. The detective allows Valzhanu to take Marius to his grandfather and stop by to say goodbye to Cosette – this is not at all like the ruthless Javer. Velzhan was amazed when he realized that the policeman had let him go. Meanwhile for Javer himself comes the most tragic moment in his life: for the first time he broke the law and released the criminal to freedom! Unable to resolve the contradiction between duty and compassion, Javer freezes on the bridge – and then a dull splash is heard.
Marius for a long time is between life and death. In the end, youth wins. The young man finally meets Cosette, and their love blossoms. They receive the blessing of Jean Valjean and Mr. Zhilmonman, who in his joys completely forgave his grandson. February 16, 1833 the wedding took place. Valjean confesses to Marius that he is a runaway convict. Young Pommersy is horrified. Nothing should overshadow Cosetta’s happiness, so the perpetrator should gradually disappear from her life – after all, he is just the adoptive father. At first, Cosette is somewhat surprised, and then gets used to the increasingly rare visits of her former patron. Soon the old man stopped coming at all, and the girl forgot about him. And Jean Valjean began to wither and die: the porter invited a doctor to him, but he only spread his hands – this man, apparently, lost the dearest creature for himself, and no medicine here will help. Marius also believes that a convict deserves such an attitude – no doubt, it was he who robbed Mr. Madeleine and killed the defenseless Javer who had saved him from the bandits. And then the greedy Tenardieu reveals all the secrets: Jean Valjean is not a thief or a murderer. Moreover: it was he who took Marius out of the barricade. A young man generously pays a foul innkeeper – and not only for the truth about Valjean. Once the rascal did a good deed, rummaging in the pockets of the wounded and killed – the man rescued by him was called Georges Ponmersi. Marius and Cosette go to Jean Valjean to beg for forgiveness. The old convict dies happy – his beloved children took his last breath. A young couple orders a touching epitaph on the grave of the sufferer.
