Evaine, or Knight with a Lion.
At the Trinity, in the chambers of the noble and kind King Arthur, a brilliant nobleman is feasting. Knights lead a pleasant conversation with the ladies. One entertaining story replaces another, and here is the word honest Kalogrenan: he wants to tell his friends what he hid before. Seven years ago, the knight had a chance to get into the dense Broselyadsky forest. After a whole day, he saw a small cozy castle, where he was greeted very cordially. At first the lover knight reproaches himself for his extravagance, but then decides to win a charming lady who pierced his heart. Reasonable girl, guessing about the fervent feelings of Evaine, starts a conversation about him with his mistress: there is no need to lament the dead – perhaps the Lord will send her the best husband who will be able to protect the source. The lady angrily breaks off the confidante, but curiosity proves to be stronger, and she asks which kind of warrior the warrior who overcame her husband belongs to. The girl, who brightened up Ivane’s imprisonment, arranges everything in the best way: the beautiful Lodina agrees to marry a noble knight, the son of King Uriena. The vassals unanimously approve of her choice: she needs a reliable defender – the glory of Ivane is roaring all over the earth, and he proved his strength by defeating the powerful Esquados.
The next morning the news comes that the king is approaching the spring with all his retinue. The evil-tongued Kay shames the missing Evaine and declares that he will fight with the knight who humiliated Kalogrenan. After two weeks of wandering, the knight again finds himself at a miraculous source and is deprived of feelings of grief; The lion, considering him dead, is trying to commit suicide. Recovering, Evaine sees Lunette in the chapel – slandered and sentenced to death at the stake. There is no one to protect her, for Messer Ivane disappeared, and Messer Gavain went in search of the queen abducted by vile enemies. The knight with the lion promises to stand up for the virgin – he will fight with three opponents at once. Ivane defeated the villains in the eyes of the crowd waiting to be executed. Regal Lodina invites the wounded hero to the castle, but the knight says that he must wander until he redeems the blame before the beautiful lady – without recognizing her husband, Lodina complains about the cruelty of his lover. Suddenly, an unfamiliar knight appears and, to King Arthur’s great joy, summons Gawaine to battle. The battle begins – a terrible battle, in which, best of friends, without knowing it. They fight to the death: Evaine wants to kill Gavain, Gawain wants to kill Ivan, But the forces of the opponents are equal – they can not win, but they do not want to yield. In vain, the king and the queen try to appeal to the elder sister’s conscience – a stubborn and greedy maid does not want to listen. But with the coming of the night the fight is still interrupted. Opponents enter into a conversation and finally get to know each other. Both are horrified: Evaine is saying, that Gwaine defeated, Gavain begs to be recognized as the victor of Ivaine. The king pronounces a verdict: the sisters must make peace and share the inheritance fairly. Suddenly a huge beast runs from the forest with a loud roar, and it becomes clear to everyone who rumored the Knight with the lion.
The court greeted Yvaine with glee, but he still feels dejected: he can not live without a beautiful Lodina, but he does not hope for forgiveness anymore. Evaine decides to return to the source and again cause a storm. Hearing a rumble of thunder, Lodina trembles with fear. Vassals of her murmur – the castle did not become alive. Lodina objects to this that the oath has already been brought: it will be necessary to forgive Yvaine, so as not to ruin the soul. A happy knight encases his wife in a hug. His wanderings ended – love triumphed.
