Summary “Blue Bird” by Maeterlinck

Tiltil and Mitil peacefully sleep on the eve of Christmas. Music is heard outside the windows and wakes the children. They look out into the street and see the noisy celebration of Christmas from rich neighbors. Then someone knocked at the door. On the threshold stood an old woman in green robes with a coquettish red cap, slightly shifted sideways. It was the Fairy of Berilyun – lame, hunchbacked, with a hooked nose and a wand. She says that children should find the Bluebird and is very angry when the children do not understand why. Berilyuna gives the girl a green hat with a diamond instead of a pompon, and says that that magic hat reveals the true meaning of things. When Tiltil puts this cap on his head, everything around becomes unrecognizable beautiful: instead of the old fairy fairy, the princess stood in front of her, and their meagerly furnished room – into a rich apartment. The Soul of Hours, Dua Karavaev, The Soul of Fire incarnates before the children by a quick

man dressed in red leggings. Appear Dog and Cat – people in animal costumes. The dog enthusiastically circles around Tiltili, calling her a little deity. The cat, incredulously sniffing Mitya, shakes hands with his pathos. A fountain beats from the sink, and out of its spray comes a girl dressed in water, like in clothes. Between it and the Fire is a fight. Suddenly the jug overturns, and from the spilled milk timidly shows a white man. This is the Soul of Milk. The Sahara’s soul turned out to be a sugary, unreal man who emerges from the candy with a crash, tearing the wrapper. The fallen lamp releases the Soul of Light from itself – a shining beauty wrapped in a sparkling veil. Someone starts knocking at the door. Tiltil frightens off his hat, and the Souls of Fire, Bread, Water, Sugar, Light, as well as the Dog with the Cat do not have time to go back. Turned back into an old woman, the fairy tells them that they will accompany the children in their hard way, and help them find the Bluebird. After the goal of the journey is achieved, they will die. Only the Soul of Light and the Dog are ready to go.
But the fairy does not pay attention to the general protest and leads everyone through the window to find everyone suitable vestments. When mother and father Til look in the nursery, they see that the children quietly snore in a dream. Souls meanwhile are at Berilyun, in her magnificent palace. Each of them now flaunts in delightful new bones. Between them ripens a plot against Tiltil and Mitili. The organizer of this meeting was the Cat, reminding everyone that a man (in her words – “despot”) at one time enslaved all these souls. She believes, that the Blue Bird will allow a person to comprehend all Souls, as animals, and Elements and Objects. Then they are all doomed to lifelong slavery. The dog categorically disagrees with her. Here comes the Fairy, and everyone is silent. The cat substitutes the Dog, and Tiltil scolds him. Before sending the children on their way, Fairy feeds them: Bread cuts two pieces from his body, and Sugar takes two fingers off himself. Tiltil and Mitil keep their way to the Land of Recollections. There Souls will not follow them. In this country, children meet their long-dead grandfather and grandmother. The deceased explain to the brother and sister what happens to the person after death: he seems to fall asleep, and so much that wakes up only when the close ones call them. After seeing relatives and having dinner with them, Tiltil and Mitil are to meet the Soul of Light, and they hurry to say goodbye to the hospitable dead. They ask grandfather and grandmother for a gift of a blue thrush, but as soon as they come out of the Sran Memories, the thrush becomes an ordinary black color. The cat arrives in the kingdom of the Night and warns the proprietor that soon Tiltil and Mitil are coming here. But the Night can not prevent them: a person has the right to learn her secrets. The cat and the Night rely only on child negligence and hope that they will not notice the real Blue Bird – that is not afraid of the day. Children come, along with them – the Dog, Bread and Sugar. At first the Night tries to envelop the travelers with Illusions, then so expends Tiltily that he does not dare to take the key to all the doors in her castle. When the children opened one door, Ghosts jumped out of her. Behind the other hid various diseases: the freedom managed to get out only Nasmork, almost released the War. After Tiltil discovers the door behind which Noh arranged a pantry: there are confused in the mess Superfluous stars, fragrances, walking lights and fireflies. The last and biggest door The night asks the children to leave alone, telling them such horrors that everyone is frightened of running away. Only Tiltil and the Dog remain. They are also frightened, no less than others, but overcome fear and push the key into the keyhole. Behind the door was an amazing garden, in which lived a dream and night light. The landscape was illuminated by the wonderful planets and stars, over which blue birds fly carelessly. The rest also enter the garden behind the children. There everyone catches a few blue birds and they leave. In the daylight, all the birds die – the only one that endures it, left to fly somewhere on the loose. Travelers approach the forest. The first is the Cat, ostensibly polubeznichat with trees and cajole them. In fact, she sets them against Tiltil and Mitil, saying that their father is a lumberjack. There is nobody in the world, except for the woodcutters, whom the trees would hate so much. Tiltily is pressed to the ground, Dog is enveloped by Ivy. A faithful friend barely scrambles out and rushes to the aid of the master. When they were ready to say goodbye to life, the Soul of Light appeared. She reminds Tiltil of his magic hat. The boy turns the diamond, and the trees envelop the quiet gloom. The cat behaves as if nothing had happened. The quest for the Blue Bird leads the travelers to the cemetery. When darkness reigns around, Tiltil carefully turns the diamond on his hat. Graves come to life, from them there are fine white concrete. They open and sound a chorus that glorifies the Sun and Life. When Tiltil asks where the dead are, he is answered, that they are not. Their next stop is in the Garden of Beatitudes. Bliss nearly draw children and satellites into the abyss of vicious pleasures. Only by turning the diamond the boy sees how much happening around is insignificant and ugly. Then there are Beatitudes of the House. They are surprised that Tiltil does not see them. They represent happiness from the fact that you are healthy, the happiness of loving your parents, the happiness of contemplating the blue sky, etc. Then the Beatitudes of the House tell the Great Joys that children have appeared. Great Joys come in the guise of beautiful radiant angels. Among them – the Great Joy of the Fair Deed, the Joy of the Good Acts, the Joy of Understanding and Awareness, the Joy of the Mother of Kindness. Children, seeing the last Joy, find the similarity between her and their own mother. The joy of the Mother says that she was always present at their home. When the Joy is learned, that the leader of Tiltil and Mitili was the Soul of Light, they kneel before her like before their queen. Great Joys ask the Soul of Light to take off the veil, exposing those Truths and Beatitudes that no one has ever seen before. But the Soul of Light has its own order on this matter, and it only draws the blanket closer to it, saying that the time has not yet come, and at the right time it will uncover without shame. She embraces all the Great Joy in turn and bids farewell to them. Then the Soul of Light leads the children to the Azure Palace of the Kingdom of the Future. They are surrounded by radiant Children. They have not yet had a chance to incarnate on Earth. Knowing that to go on a visit to the Earth is worthless without gifts, the Children have already figured out what they will give her. Someone is going to make the Machine of Happiness, the other is to extend all people life. Someone promises to become an amazing master of caring for gardens, the other wants to be the King of the Ten Planets to destroy injustice. Two Children stand, not breaking arms. They are in love with each other and do not lose sight of each other for a moment: they have recently learned that separation awaits them on Earth. Now they can not get enough of each other. To Tiltil and Mitya the kid approaches, which is represented by their future brother. Zarya gets up – in her watch on Earth there are always babies born. Time comes, too, an ancient old man with a beard to his knees, leaning on a scythe and holding an hourglass in his other hand. He directs the ship, which carries children from the Azure Palace there, to Earth. In the distance you can hear the songs of Mothers who are waiting for their children. Time was angry when they saw the strangers, and began to shout at them. Tiltil, Mytil and the Soul of Light are saved by the hat. The Blue Bird is hidden under the Soul of Light under the garment. Finally, the brother and sister are again at the green fence of their house. There they say goodbye to their companions. Bread gives them back the cage where the Blue Bird was supposed to be sitting. The soul of the Light makes the assumption that this bird either never existed, or it changes color as desired. Souls tearfully say goodbye to their children. Fire in a fit of passion almost does not scorch them, Water gently murmurs in parting, Sugar crumbles in its sugary manner. The dog rushes to them from all legs, missing them, still not even parting. Children want the Soul of Light to stay with them forever, but it can not. But she promises that they will always see her reflection in every pure and bright impulse of the soul. At home everything changed in an amazing way: the house became cleaner, newer, filled with happiness. When the Mother looks in the nursery, Tiltil and Mitil suck their fingers in a dream. She begins to arouse them with affectionate words. Waking up, the children begin to tell each other about what they saw while they were on the road. The mother does not understand a single word of it and decides that the son and daughter are ill. While mother called the doctor, their neighbor, Berlengo, came to them. Outwardly, it reminds children of the fairy of Berilyuny, and Tiltil begins to apologize to her for not having found the Bluebird. The old woman Berlengo realized that a fairy tale had dreamed to the children – maybe the full moon on them works that way. In response, she tells the children about her granddaughter: she is seriously ill, the Doctor says that this is from the nerves, and he is powerless. Then Tiltil decides to give her a turtledove, which the girl so long wanted. When Tiltil sees a bird, it seems to him that it is blue. He gives the bird sick. Tiltil and Mitil now relate to everything new, that they see around – and bread with sugar and milk on the table, and fire and water, and curling around the dog with a cat. An old Berlengo comes to them, leading an extraordinarily adorable little girl to the handle. She gently caresses the turtledove that clung to her breast. Brother and sister find that the child is very similar to the Soul of Light. When Tiltil begins to tell the Girl how and what to feed her pet, the turtledore escapes from her hands and flies away. The girl begins to cry bitterly, and Tiltil promises to return the bird to her. Then he asks the reader that if he sees the Bluebird, let him know that they need it all to become happy. ” that the child is very similar to the Soul of Light.
