At night
Vasya, nicknamed Golovan, wakes up in the boys’ bedroom. After listening to the rain and observing the mysterious night figures, he approaches the candle in the basin, around which the night gatherings of 2 brothers (Vasya and Mark) and 2 sisters (Masha and Shura) traditionally take place. Nanny initially forbade to meet in the middle of the night, but soon the parties came to a mutual consensus. Soon, Mark-Mordik wakes up. Vasya tells the whole honest company of history from the life of their family, including from the period when “they were not yet,” but these stories are not always believed. This night the family is expected to replenish, and the lads are discussing where the baby will come from. The most convincing children seem to be the version of the Jew Moshki: the children are brought by angels. Soon the girls and the nurse were awakened. The nurse runs away, then the children go into the room next to the parent’s bedroom,
The coachman Khvedko appears; he pushes Mark into the lighted part of the room, so that he knows whether to unharness the horses. Children are interested – so where do the children come from? – but after the usual “adult” versions, voiced by Michael (found under burdock, down on the golden thread), they themselves told about the angels. Mikhail vigorously criticizes them – after all, “the truth is higher than personal feelings!”, But Henry supports the little ones (“they feel the secret and try to clothe her in images”). After looking at the newborn sister and chatting with Hved’k on the porch, the children go to bed, getting a couple of slaps from the nanny.
