Songbird Contest

Long ago, when there were no tape recorders, the rich and not so Muscovites tried to fill the boring silence with the help of a variety of feathered vocalists: nightingales, oatkins, starlings, goldfinches. The most popular tenor was a tiny canary.

Introduced in Russia in the XVIII century bird either with longing, or with cold began to master the gentle trills of oatmeal and other songbirds.

The bird was unpretentious in everyday life. Her daily diet is a teaspoon of a special mixture of oatmeal, flax and hemp, and now – a food from the well-known bird lovers package “Kesha.” He does not experience canary and reproductive problems in captivity, regularly producing offspring from 2 to 6 chicks. The average life of a bird is 6-7 years, the musical record of which is 5 years.

All canaries can be divided into two classes: models and artists. The first do not have a special affection for a beautiful song, but they pleases the eye, while the latter improve

their singing at home conservatories. Like all wild songbirds, canaries are mostly sung by males – kenars. The singing of young birds is grounded by proper training, then they make a selection of the best singers, who can already be represented in canary singing competitions. Such an occupation is a kind of art. At the same time, this is also a sporting event.

One author of popular books on birds says: “People who come to the competition and were not familiar with a good song before, are surprised: can the canaries so sing? They never expected this.”

If the dove is valued for plumage, then the canary is singing. Classics of canary vocal is considered to be an oatmeal, and the school of learning canaries to such singing is Russian. The canaries of this song have become famous all over the world.

The main and perhaps the main thing in teaching such birds is darkness, so that the kenar sang less and listened more to the quality singing of the teacher, whose role is successfully performed by the tape recording.

Since 1957 all-Union competitions of singing canaries of oatmeal

tunes began to take place in Moscow. Initially, they were held twice a year, and then stopped at the same date – the first Saturday in December. December or January is the best time to hold a contest: birds that have just recovered after molting can most fully show the merits of their song. In recent years, canary concerts have been held in the Moscow House of Nature, but their popularity has dropped significantly. Previously, the competition was held for two days, and up to 100 cenars took part in them, now 25-40 contestants are recruited. With the capital prisms, canaries compete from Kiev, Minsk, Saratov, Tambov, Ulyanovsk, Novosibirsk, Yaroslavl. More than 75 percent of spectators, and in combination with bird owners, are elderly men.

Judges are respected people, there are more than a dozen competitions behind each one. Interested in how the winner of the singing competitions is determined, our correspondent asked for clarification to the judge-expert.

Members of the judging panel do not need to know the owner of the bird being listened, for which the kenars are assigned sequential numbers during registration. Each bird is given 10 minutes. If during this time the bird does not sing its song, it is withdrawn from the competition. A canary who has received a diploma of one degree or another, as a rule, is not exposed to the competition for the second time, and she remains pleased with her singing by the owners.

Alas, the number of cenars in Moscow decreases every year. The driving force of our society – the “new Russians” – prefers fighting dogs or, at worst, overseas cockatoo. A small bird does not arouse any interest either by its appearance or price: in the bird market it can be bought for 50 rubles.

True, no self-respecting kenavod will enter the market: a bird, they believe, can only be bought from the owners, when its pedigree is known for certain.

But the most sad thing is not this. Rarely the ranks of true kenavodov. There is no one to learn from the experience of bird teachers with many years of experience. And records of singing of the best kenars are stored on reels intended for listening in reel tape recorders…
