Information infrastructure

1. Why do you think information is considered a valuable “resource”? Give arguments in favor of such a statement.

Information is information transmitted by people in an oral, written or other way.

From the middle of XX century. information is a general scientific concept, including the exchange of information between people, a person and an automaton, a machine and an automatic device; the exchange of signals in the animal and plant world; transfer of signs from the cell to the cell, from the body to the body; one of the basic concepts of cybernetics.

2. New words – mobile phone, pager, fax, e-mail, Internet – burst into our life. Explain how you understand the possibilities of each type of communication.

Paging communication – radiotelephone communication, sending by the phone of messages dictated by the sender-subscriber and receiving them on the radio channel by the recipient-subscriber with the help of a pager – a radio

receiver with a liquid crystal display on which the received alphanumeric texts are displayed. A pager is a means of one-way communication: you can only receive messages to it. In addition to messages dictated by the sender, you can receive stock quotes, exchange rates, business news, politics and sports, weather forecasts, traffic information on city streets, etc.

Facsimile communication is an electric method of transferring graphic information – a fixed image of text or tables, drawings, diagrams, photographs, etc. It is realized with the help of fax machines and telecommunication channels.

The Internet, a worldwide computer network that brings together thousands of networks, including networks of armed forces and government organizations, educational institutions, charitable organizations, industrial enterprises and corporations of all kinds, as well as commercial enterprises that provide individuals with access to the network.

Information stored in a variety of computer networks connected by the Internet forms a giant electronic library. A huge amount of data distributed between computer

networks makes it difficult to find and obtain the desired information. To facilitate the search on the Internet, more and more sophisticated means developed.

Commercial search engines, which are programs, search for necessary information among a large volume of documents for keywords. The user receives search results in the form of a list of headings and descriptions of documents.

The Internet is the most dynamically developing medium of information exchange in the history of mankind. The modern possibilities of access to the Internet from mobile phones, as well as the exchange of information through a network of other devices, expand the circle of users.

The most popular Internet services include:

E-mail; Search and view text and multimedia information; Electronic commerce; Negotiations online; Conferences in which you can post messages and see the answers to them; Role-playing games.

The most visited sites in the world are in the USA. In 1999, there were over 100 million Internet users. In 2001, the European Community – more than 120 million in Russia, the Internet is also developing very quickly – by 2002 there were more than 4 million users.

3. Why is the development of modern telecommunication facilities so slow in rural areas?

The development of telecommunications means of communication requires large investments, which is justified only if there are a large number of consumers. Therefore, in rural areas with a lower population density, this process is slower.

4. How can you contact your local town, village and other state from your city? Make a conclusion about the level of communication development in your area.

Think about the large number of people in your village who can use the phone.

How many are available for cellular and Internet access?

The conclusion about the level of communication development in your area depends on your answers.

5. How does your town get and send the necessary information? By what means, for how long? What is the cost of the services? What is the reliability of the connection? What would you suggest to improve the situation?

This question is related to the previous one. Think about what other means of communication you or your friends use. Is there a post office and a telegraph in your village? What is the reliability of these services?

6. The computer creates great opportunities for creativity and at the same time limits it. How to overcome this contradiction?

Limitations in creativity are associated with algorithms and action schemes embedded in the computer. Working on the computer, we in most cases follow the clear rules, many programs offer ready-made templates. However, if there is a creative principle in a person, it will manifest itself. If you are free to own the programs you need and use the computer as a tool for translating your ideas, you will be able to avoid dictating the given templates.
