“I am in the castle of King” S. Hill in summary

Warings is the family home of the Hooper. He was bought by Edmund’s great-grandfather. There was not much money in the family, the land had to be sold with time, but the house remained. Now the grandfather who lived in Warings died, and Edmund and his father are moving there.

Edmund’s father, Joseph, was widowed a few years ago. The marriage was unhappy. “When the son, poured out by Elin, left to study, Joseph could not remember her face for a long time.” Now Joseph is looking for a housekeeper who would look after the housekeeping and for Edmund.

Edmund awaits with disgust the appearance of Mrs. Helina Kinshaw and her son Charles in Warings. “I did not want to come here, this is another house where everything is not ours,” Charles Kinshow thinks. And at this time Edmund Hooper throws him a note from the window: “I did not want you to come.”

Mrs. Kinshou and Mr. Hooper are very pleased with the acquaintance. Mrs. Kinshaw

is a widow, a decent woman, you can rely on her. And it’s just wonderful that boys of the same age, they will definitely make friends. But boys do not want to become friends. Hooper does not like that someone invades his domain. Especially since Kinshaw does not want to admit that he, Hooper, is in charge here.

And Kinshaw is so hard to be back in a strange house, where everyone is not with their mother, where they are not the owners. And Hooper then chases him, then, on the contrary, follows his every step.

The first week of Kinshaw’s stay in Warings takes place. And he goes for a walk. One. Anyway, just to get away from Hooper. That it flew almost over his head? Do not be afraid, it’s just a crow. But why, why was she following him? We must flee. How difficult it is to run through a plowed field. And this eerie bird, she flies after him, croaks, just about to attack. On the field at the house Charles falls. He lies, unable to rise, and the crow pecks him in the back. He screams at the top of his voice, and eventually the crow flies away. Kinshaw hardly reaches the house and notices

Hooper watching him in the window of his room.

The next night, Hooper pulls a scarecrow from a loft and puts it in Kinshaw’s room. Kinshaw wakes up, turns on the light and sees on the edge of her bed an awful bird. He understands that this is only a scarecrow, but he is still scared. But the main thing – do not cry, because Hooper certainly stands under the door and eavesdrops. And Kinshaw does not move until morning, unable to even push a scarecrow from the bed.

The war is declared. Hence, there is only one thing – to run. Escape from Warings and, most importantly, from Hooper. There is already a cache, some supplies have been collected. But Hooper finds a hiding place and knows perfectly well what Kinshow is going to do. “And I’m with you,” he declares.

No, Kinshaw will run away alone. Now it’s early in the morning, especially since it’s better to think of a day – Mom and Mr. Hooper are going to London and they will not be home all day. So, they will only miss him in the evening.

Early morning. Kinshaw passes through the field, enters the Steep Bowl. Yes, it’s a big forest and unfamiliar. But… It’s good that the morning is so sunny. Kinshaw closes his eyes and enters the forest. Nothing wrong. How nice and peaceful it is! Only… what is this sound? Kinshaw turns around and sees a few meters away from Hooper. Nowhere from it you can not get away!

When they go so far as to get clear – they are lost, Kinshaw is not frightened, Hooper is frightened. And then another thunderstorm. Hooper just can not stand the storm. And the first to go into the forest is afraid. And Kinshaw – no. They go to the river. Kinshaw goes on scouting. Goes back and sees: Hooper lies face down, face in the water, and has blood on his head. Kinshaw pulls him out, drags him ashore, tries to do artificial respiration, builds a fire. If only Hooper did not die! Hooper vomits, he clears his throat, seems to be alive. At night, he is shivering, Kinshaw gives him his sweater, and Hooper whines and fits. Probably, now Kinshaw could hit him. But – why, he is still stronger than Hooper. And it will not be necessary to escape more, Kinshaw is no longer afraid of Hooper. He believed in himself.

Find them early in the morning. And Hooper screams: “It’s all Kinshaw! He pushed me into the water!”

And adults do not seem to notice what is happening. And my mother tells Charles that you can not be so ungrateful that Mr. Hooper wants to take care of him as his own son, and therefore he will give Charles to the same school Edmund learns. Where can I get away from this accursed Hooper? Kinshaw finds a barn in the distance from home, but even there he is found by Hooper. Finds and locks. And unlocks only in the daytime when he learns that adults are going somewhere to go with them by car.

Castle Lydell, a huge, dilapidated, on the shore of the lake. And Kinshaw climbs the wall, to the very top. “Chur, I’m in the castle king!” Hooper does not stand and climbs after him. But can not go down – afraid of heights. And then Kinshaw understands that everything can – can push Hooper down, he can just frighten him, and he will break. “I am the king in the castle.” What I want, I will do with him. ” But he realizes that he will not do anything with him, but, on the contrary, will stretch out his hand, grab him from behind and help him to hold on. He reaches out to Hooper, but he flinches in horror and flies down.

Kinshaw thinks Hooper died. But no, he just crashed. Lies in the hospital, Mom Kinshaw travels to him every day. And Kinshaw is finally left to himself. And even finds a friend – the farmer’s son Fielding. He shows him calves, turkeys, hamster. And Kinshaw tells him about Hooper, admits that he is afraid of him. Fielding is a sensible guy. What Hooper fear, because nothing to do wrong Hooper Kinshaw can not. Only frightens, and that’s all. Did Kinshaw finally have his own friend?

But Hooper comes back, and he does not intend to let Kinshou go. Especially since Mr. Hooper proposed to Mrs. Kinshaw. “Now you will not turn away.” “You will listen to my dad, and me.” Surely Hooper had told Mrs. Kinshaw to invite Fielding to tea. And Hooper can be, when necessary, a normal guy. And Fielding does not know why Kinshaw does not want to play the three of us, does not want to go with him and Hooper to look at the farm for a new tractor.

Kinshaw goes to Hooper’s room. Here it is, the map of the battles that Hooper so lovingly drew. He carries it with him and burns it in a clearing by the grove. Come what may. But Hooper pretends nothing has happened. Do not roar, do not complain to adults. The next day everyone is in trouble, in training – tomorrow the boys go to school. Everything is almost collected, in the Kinshaw room – some suitcases, my mother comes to kiss him at night and sits with him for a long time. And when he leaves, Hooper throws a note under his door: “You’ll wait, Kinshaw.”

The morning is gray and clear, it’s cold outside. Kinshaw leaves the house, passes through the field, goes to the grove. The forest was full of joy. He repeats several times to himself: “Everything is good, everything is fine.” I found the very clearing where they made a fire. He undressed, put things together in a pile and entered the water, reached the depths, dipped his face in the water and took a deep breath.

Found it Hooper, immediately guessed where Kinshaw could go. When I saw the outstretched body of Kinshaw, suddenly I thought: it’s because of me, I did it, it’s him because of me – and froze, full of triumph.
