“Heptameron” of Navarre in summary

Ten noble gentlemen and ladies who went to the waters, stuck on the way back because of the autumn mudslides and attacks of the robbers. They find shelter in the monastery and wait for the workers to build a bridge across the spilled river, which should take ten to twelve days. Thinking about how to pass the time, friends ask for advice to Mrs. Oazil, the oldest and most respectable lady of their company. She advises reading the Holy Scriptures. Everyone is asking Ms. Vazil to read the Scripture to them in the morning aloud, the rest of the time they decide, following the example of Boccaccio’s heroes, to tell different stories in turn and discuss them. Shortly before that, the Dauphin, his wife and Queen Margarita, together with several courtiers, wanted to write a book similar to the “Decameron”, but did not include in it a single novel based on a true event.

Novella is the eighth. A young man named Borne from Allte County wanted to change his virtuous wife

to a servant. The maid told the lady about the harassment of Borne, and she decided to teach her a lustful wife. She told the maid to appoint him a date in the dressing room, where it was dark, and she came instead of herself. But Borne devoted to his plans for a maid’s maid, and he wanted to visit the maid after him. Borne could not refuse a friend and, having stayed with the imaginary maid for a while, gave him his place. The friend was entertained with an imaginary servant, confident that her husband had returned to her, until the morning and took his wedding ring from her finger. What surprise was Borne when the next day he saw on the finger of a friend the engagement ring of his wife and realized what a trap he had himself set up for himself! And the wife he is, hoping for some kind of saving misunderstanding, asked where she was doing the ring, disassembled him for his lasciviousness, which would have made him even “take a goat in a bonnet for the most beautiful girl in the world.” Finally convinced that he had set himself horns, Borne did not tell his wife that the second time to her came not he
and she involuntarily committed a sin. He also asked to be silent, but the secret always becomes obvious, and Born deserved the nickname of the cuckold, although his wife’s reputation did not suffer from this. that the second time to her came not he and she involuntarily committed a sin. He also asked to be silent, but the secret always becomes obvious, and Born deserved the nickname of the cuckold, although his wife’s reputation did not suffer from this.

Novella is the tenth. The noble youth Amadour fell in love with the daughter of the Countess of Aranda Florida, who was only twelve years old. She was a very noble family, and he had no hope of marrying her, but he could not stop loving her. To be able to see Florida more often, he married her friend Avanturade and thanks to his intelligence and courtesy became his man in the house of the Countess of Aranda. He learned that Florida loves son Enrique of Aragon. To spend more time with her, he listened for hours to her stories about the son of the Duke of Aragon, diligently melting his feelings for her. And once, unable to restrain himself any longer, he confessed to Florida in love. He did not demand any reward for his loyalty and loyalty, he just wanted to preserve the friendship of Florida and serve his whole life. Florida was surprised: why should Amadour ask, that he already has? But Amadour explained to her that he was afraid to betray himself with a careless glance or word and give rise to gossip, which could damage the reputation of Florida. Amadur’s arguments convinced Florida of his noble intentions, and she calmed down. To divert his eyes, Amadour began to take care of the beautiful Polina, and in the beginning Avanturada, and then Florida, became jealous of her. Amadour went to war, and his wife stayed with Florida, who promised not to be separated from her.

Amadur was taken prisoner, where only his joy was the letters of Florida. Mother decided to give Florida for the Duke of Cardon, and Florida dutifully married the unloved. The son of Enrique Aragon died, and Florida was very unhappy. Returning from captivity, Amadur settled in the house of the Duke of Cardon, but soon Avanturada died, and Amadura felt uncomfortable living there. With grief, he fell ill, and Florida came to visit him. Deciding that long-term fidelity deserves a reward, Amadour tried to take possession of Florida, but he failed. Virtuous Florida, insulted by the encroachment of Amadur in her honor, was disappointed in him and did not want to see him again. Amadour left, but could not accept the thought that he would never see Florida again. He tried to win over his mother, the Countess of Aranda, who favored him.

Amadour again went to war and accomplished many feats. Three years later he made another attempt to conquer Florida – he came to the Countess of Aranda, from whom she was staying at that time, but Florida again rejected it. Taking advantage of the nobility of Florida, who did not tell her mother about the misbehavior of Amadur, he quarreled with his mother and daughter, and the Countess of Aranda did not speak to Florida for seven years. The war of Grenada with Spain began. The husband of Florida, her brother and Amadour bravely fought their enemies and died a glorious death. Burying her husband, Florida had a haircut in a nun, “choosing as his wife the one who saved her from the excessively passionate love of Amadur and the anguish that did not leave her in marriage.”

Novella is thirty-three. Earl Karl of Angoulême was reported that in one of the villages near Cognac there is a very pious girl who, strangely enough, became pregnant. She assured everyone that she had never known a man and could not understand how it happened. According to her, it could only be done by a holy spirit. People believed her and revered her as a saint.

The priest in this parish was her brother, a stern and middle-aged man, who after this incident began to keep his sister locked up. The Count suspected that there was some kind of deception, and ordered the chaplain and the judicial officer to investigate. On their instructions, the priest, after Mass, publicly asked his sister how she could become pregnant and at the same time remain a virgin. She replied that she did not know, and swore under the perpetual damnation that no man was closer to her than her brother. Everyone believed her and calmed down, but when the chaplain and the judicial officer reported this to the count, he, after reflection, suggested that the brother was her seducer, because “Christ had already come to earth and wait for the second Christ, we should not.” When the priest was imprisoned, he confessed everything,

Novella is the forty-fifth. He was very fond of his wife, but this did not stop him from taking care of other women. And here he was captivated by a servant, however, so that his wife did not think about it, often out loud scolded the girl for laziness. Before the Day of Beating Babies, he told his wife that it was necessary to teach a sloth, but since his wife is too weak and pitiful, he undertakes to whip the servant himself. My wife did not mind, and my husband bought rods and moistened them in brine. When the Day of beating babies came, the upholsterer got up early, went up to the maid and really arranged for her “beating”, but not at all what the wife was thinking about. Then he went down to his wife and told her that the wretch would long remember how he had taught her. The servant complained to the hostess that her husband had done wrong to her, but the clerk’s wife thought that the servant was referring to spanking, and said, that the upholsterer did it with her knowledge and consent. The maid, seeing that the landlady approves of her husband’s behavior, decided that, apparently, it is not such a sin, once done at the instigation of the one whom she considered a model of virtue. She did not resist the harassment of her master anymore and did not cry after “beating babies”.

And one day in the winter, the clerk brought the maid to the garden in the same shirt in the morning and began to make love to her. A neighbor saw them at the window and decided to tell the deceived wife everything. But the timekeeper noticed on time that the neighbor was watching them, and decided to outwit her. He entered the house, woke his wife and led her into the garden in a single shirt, as before the maid was taking out. Gloriously having fun with his wife right on the snow, he returned to the house and fell asleep. In the morning in the church, a neighbor told the clerk’s wife what scene she was observing from the window, and advised her to dismiss the shameless maid. In response, the wife of the furniture maker began to assure her that it was she, and not the maid, who was amusing herself with her husband in the garden: after all, you should indulge your husbands-she did not refuse her husband for such an innocent request. At home the wife of the clerk gave her husband all his conversation with a neighbor and, not for a moment suspecting her husband of treason,

Novella is sixty-two. One lady wanted to entertain another interesting story and began to tell her own love affair, pretending that it was not about her, but about some unknown lady. She described how one young nobleman fell in love with his neighbor’s wife and for several years sought her reciprocity, but unsuccessfully, for although his neighbor was old and his wife young, she was virtuous and faithful to her husband. Desperate to persuade a young woman to commit treason, the nobleman decided to take her by force. One day, when the lady’s husband was away, he entered her house at dawn and rushed to her on the bed dressed, without taking off even the boots with spurs. When she woke up, the lady was terribly scared, but no matter how she tried to reason with him, he did not want to listen to anything and seized her by force, threatening that if she would tell anyone about this, he would announce publicly, that she herself sent for him. The lady was in such fear that she did not dare even to call for help. After a while, after hearing that the servants were coming, the young man jumped out of bed to escape, but in a hurry he caught on with the spur for the blanket and pulled him to the floor, leaving the lady to lie completely naked. And although the narrator was allegedly talking about another lady, she could not resist and exclaimed: “You will not believe how surprised I was when I saw that I was completely naked.” The listener laughed and said: “Well, I see you can tell entertaining stories!” The unlucky story-teller tried to justify himself and defend his honor, but this honor was no longer in sight. the young man jumped out of bed to escape, but in a hurry he caught hold of the spur for the blanket and pulled him to the floor, leaving the lady to lie completely naked. Novella is the seventy-first. The saddler from Amboise, seeing that his beloved wife was dying, was so grieved that the compassionate servant began to console him, so successfully that he, directly in front of the dying wife, threw her onto the bed and began to caress her. Unable to endure such lasciviousness, the saddler’s wife, who had not been able to say a word for two days, cried: “No, no, no, I have not died yet!” – and burst into desperate abuse. Anger cleared her throat and she began to recover, “and never since then has she had to reproach her husband for not loving her.”

At the beginning of the eighth day the narrative breaks off.
