Gave me the floor

In Russian folk art there is a proverb: “I gave the floor – keep it”. What does it mean and why is it so important – “keep your word”?

A word is a great power, because they can unite or disconnect people, evoke love or, conversely, hate. And if you promised to do something to someone, gave the floor, then this is how you say: “I am an honest person, you can rely on me.” The word, the language, is the greatest wealth of man. And by giving someone the floor, you leave it as a pledge to this person. To keep the word is to affirm your “I”, your place on earth.

A person who does not fulfill promises, throws words into the wind, will never earn the respect of others. It often happens that we give ourselves a word, but we can not restrain it. We promise to get up early and do exercises, help my mother in the household, teach lessons in time, regularly clean up in my room. And the fulfillment of these promises is postponed for tomorrow, next month. Trying to fulfill the promised, the person accustoms himself to discipline, to concentration, adherence to principles.

In adult life, these qualities are very helpful. My uncle is a businessman, he works in a serious enterprise. Employees and partners highly respect and appreciate it. They know that he is a man of speech, does not throw empty promises. Therefore, they are sure of him, they trust him, and things are getting better and better.

Once I asked my uncle about the secret of his success. He answered me: “I gave you the floor – keep it, and then others will respect you and trust you.”
