Education of the Holy Roman Empire

The eastern part of the empires of Charlemagne went to Louis the German as a separate kingdom, uniting the lands of four, in fact independent, duchies: Swabia, Bavaria, Franconia and Saxony.

In Germany, the formation of the state takes place in the reign of Otto I, who, after defeating the Hungarians in 955 near Augsburg, became the most powerful ruler of Europe. He sought to establish control over the papacy and hatched plans to conquer Italy with a view to rebuilding the empire on the model of the state of Charlemagne.

The situation in Italy facilitated Otto I’s implementation of his plans. The papacy experienced a profound decline: noble Roman families sought the removal of Pope John XII and openly threatened him. Frightened father asked for help from Otto I, which was the reason for the military campaign of the German king to Italy. Without meeting resistance, Otto occupied Rome and tamed the local feudal lords. As a token of gratitude in February 962, the pope crowned Otgon I with the imperial crown. So the medieval German Empire was created. At the end of the XII century. it became known as the Holy Roman Empire. In addition to Germany, it consisted of Northern Italy and part of the Central, some Slavic lands, part of Southern France. In the first half of the XI century. Burgundy was also annexed to the empire.
